Is all in pricing...

Im wondering if all in pricing (advertised) is the law in Ontario?
For new and used dealers of cars and motorcycles -- it is. Has to include everything EXCEPT licencing and tax. Take a picture of the ad, you're done.

Beware this is not a requirement for manufacturer advertising. Honda is famous for getting buyers into dealerships using 'special offers' in their advertising. They routinely offer discounts on on sold out products to drive customers to their dealers, the dealer will attempt to convert to an available product.

Then contact the distributor, it's the dealership that is scamming you.

I recently watched a documentary (20 20 or W5?) regarding the all in pricing in calgary alberta. Basically 20 20 read flyers for a deal, and then went to the dealers to buy.

Was a 100% bait and switch. 100% of the time.

When 20 20 contacted the government agency responsible...they didn't get much more then a shoulder shrug, siding with the dealers for the most part.
Seemed to be a waste of taxpayers money having an agency to even cover this.

The dealers looked like con artists. Ditto for the agency responsible for enforcement. lol.

EDIT- I was for the most part, wondering if Ontario too was wasting taxpayers money on this.

On what products? Motorcycles?

If you see a bike on here https://motorcycle.honda.ca/special-offers and you can't find one at the advertised price then call Honda not a dealer, because this is a Honda Canada discount. Obviously at some point that inventory will become depleted, but I don't believe for a moment that these advertisements were put in place as bait and switch deals right from the start, that would undoubtedly get Honda Canada into trouble that they don't want or need.

I agree.

I don't think motorcycle sales have the volume for bait and switch.
For cars, they advertise one singular car w stock number in small print. Its always sold. Don't believe the law has any teeth.

edit- honda canada also has fine print stating dealers may sell for more or less. Go figure. as mad mike stated - the law is only applicable to dealers, not manufacturers. another go figure.

I should have bought a nissan micra the year they came out with $9999 (advertised) pricing. Was a great price for a new car. Even if it was a puddle jumper.

I wonder if all in pricing was in effect back then. I don't think so? About 3 years ago maybe?

I don't think they do much. All their advertising for self promotion just costs money. All the dealers have to do is say that the car advertised is sold.
And it applies to dealers only, not manufacturers.
Its a legal bait and switch as exposed in the documentary.

What is their yearly budget? Any examples of their all in pricing "bite"? (Actual, not theory)

Actually it's Honda Canada - they are the distributor. I have tried twice in the past to purchase Honda's that were 'on special', a CBR125 a few years back for my son, and a CBR250 NON ABS in 2012. Both were listed at big discounts, not a single dealer in Ontario had one. I'll bet they are listing little 2018 Rebels at a discount right now, try find a new one.

Try it. I did that, I asked Honda to locate one for me -- they referred me to dealers, apparently they don't have locator services -- their dealers do.

Anyhow, I don't mean to beat Honda Canada to death, I've seen this happen on cars and trucks too. I complained to Jeep about a factory promo that no dealer in Ontario was able to fulfill -- Jeep made good and I got the vehicle for the advertised price. Tried it a couple of other times, no luck.

A friend bought one, 5 speed, manual brakes, steering, windows, locks, no radioor AC. Killer deal, Nissan would have give you 10 if you asked!

One of the guys I ride with works there ;) should I give him grief for it this weekend?
him and his kids are darn good riders too!

Ask him to find a dealer with a new '18 Rebel.

300 500 or do you actually care?

Technically, if the car is being sold certified, then yes, the advertised price should be all inclusive of all dealer fees except taxes and licensing.

BUT, if the car is being advertised as "unfit" then legally the dealer can charge an additional fee for certification as long as it's disclosed in the ad, some charge $300, $700 or even $1000. There is no set rule on how much extra you can charge and ultimately, it's up to the consumer to decide with their money.

You also have the option of selling aftermarket products, extended warranties, gap coverage, life insurance, etc.

Financing a used car is a whole other animal and is essentially the most profitable for dealers.

the problem I have is EVERY large dealer visited in the documentary- didn't have the advertised vehicle at the price in the flyer and it was a very good deal. Each dealer said it was sold (new cars). This is legal. no ankle biting fine can be used aginst them, but were all supposed to feel warm and cozy with the all in rule. its an impotent rule and serves no consumers because the dealers know this.
its clear these were a bait and switch, and if the dealer states its sold they are not considered to be breaking the "all in" rule. that easy.
They are simply drawing in customers to sell them another vehicle. shameless bait and switch. Legal.
