hey guys, looking to upgrade my standard phone to a smart phone for work and as well personal use.

iPhone vs BB vs Android

pros and cons?
strengths and weakness?

Discuss!!!

There's an epic iphone vs. android thread on here somewhere. Some of it's good, some of it's stupid.

I think those are your choices - for me, BB isn't even a consideration any more. The interface and software feels soviet-era, compared to the other two.

My question to you is: do you like to tinker with a phone, being able to customize all of its features? Or do you like to just use the phone, without having to tinker with it very much? If you're the first kind of person, you'll probably prefer the android. If you're the second kind of person, you'll prefer the iphone.

Put another way: You're going out for recess - do you head for the sandbox, or the playground?

iPhone for simplicity, friendly UI and "just works" factor. great customer support to boot.

Android for customization and geek factor. Will do weird things every so often, but you can customize the crap out of it and make it like no other phone. (people will ask "wtf is that? cool!"). *I own a SGS*.

BB... for bbm. *I own their stocks, and I've been hemorrhaging money... :(*

The only thing bb has going for it is BBM. But for me, that outweighs everything else. If a good bunch of your friends don't have bbm, then just take the blackberry out of the question.

Also, can anyone explain why rim's stocks suck so much? Is it just 'cause of the playbook flop?

It's because of the playbook flop, as well as their loss of market share in the smartphone market. Overall, their product innovation isn't on par with their competitors, and in the tech business, you're only as good as your product innovation.

Epic start so far...looks like BB is definitely out for me!!!

i hope to see them recover...would be a shame to see an iconic canadian business vapourize into nothingness

Playbook flopped hard.
Their annual earnings report did not meet expectations.
Investors and Analysts claim that RIM is not innovating/evolving to keep up with the market competition. This is really obvious when it comes to their touch screen offerings and the lack of apps.

In terms of APPS, i've been told that the iPhone has much better, much more stable, and safer/secure apps vs androids?
Androids are merely are trying to be iPhones? Any truth to this?

RIM still thinks its selling smartphones. They are also VERY bad marketers for the most part. They lived in a B2B selling environment and owned it, have tried to move into a B2C universe and realized the sharks in that tank are much bigger. Meanwhile, said sharks have had significant success in coming to swim in their tank.

Funding innovation is hideously expensive and needs to pay back. Challenge is, their competitors are global and bigger. RIM has had limited success in penetrating global markets. So when they need to payback their innovation on a mostly NA scale, they aren't able to invest as much as some of their competitors.

Apple realized it is selling fashion accessories. Not phones. They are also VERY good marketers.

But back on topic...I lurves my iPhone.

BB is out. Don't even consider one because they really don't compete with iOS or Android on any level. The BBOS is clunky and slow and completely unintuitive. Skip RIM, they're garbage.

Android vs iPhone? iPhone works better out of the box, no doubt about it. The touch response is smoother and faster as well, and the OS is more simplistic. If you're a bit of a nerd you can easily jailbreak the phone and get all the free apps you want for it, as well as extensively modify the look and feel of the OS. Android is better for this though as it's even further modifiable, but that comes at the expense of general simplicity and stability, as well as battery life.

When it comes to updates and overall support, Apple wins hands down. Android is installed on 50 different devices from 10 different manufacturers, all running different versions and different hardware. This means that updates are generally controlled by the manufacturer of the device rather than Google themselves, and sometimes you can be stuck without an update for a long long time. No such problems with iPhone.

If you start comparing phones based on who's copied what or what looks like what, the discussion will quickly stop being objective and turn into a troll fest. lol.

So approach this with a very practical mindset.

At the moment, if you like to play games and want the widest variety of apps, iPhone is you guy. Android does get apps, and eventually the top apps you see with iPhone, but it takes longer to get them. But Android is picking up steam as developers see that Android is popular and gaining market shares.

I can't comment on safety/security (and I've never heard that concern for Android), but Apps generally run better on the iPhone. Reason? Like a PC and a Mac. iPhone hardware is standard, all apps are optimized when they come out. Android can vary in its hardware and software, and not all apps are optimized for each combination.

One reason to like Android, is that it's easier to use custom App Markets and pirate your Apps (should you choose to go down that path). Whereas the iPhone is locked down, and you will have to jailbreak your phone.

What about Windows Phone 7? At least they do what apple does and stick to using unified OS so that all apps work on all phones.
Problem with android is that some of the apps don't even support some phones. Everybody runs their own version of the OS and developers don't necessarily support every version of the OS and even every device.

IMHO, once you've used Retina Display (TM) no phone will ever look the same.

In the end, I say go with your gut feeling.

I have a feeling that you're leaning more towards the iPhone. And you shouldn't doubt that feeling, it's a solid phone!

Why not go to a store and try out both? or even try your friend's phones.

thanks guys for all the good perspectives...it's great to able to have a win-win choice in phones

I need to mention one last IMPORTANT thing. If your life is very integrated with google and their services, you really should put some strong consideration into Android.

I use google calenders, gmail, gchat, google+, etc and the Android integrates these services seamlessly.

The only reason I keep a BB anymore is because it has a great physical keyboard. I email (for business) and text (mostly personal) way too much to put up with a virtual keyboard

If Apple made an iPhone that was like the Torch (touchscreen with sliding physical keyboard), I would be first in line to get it ...

I have an iPad and I love it. Tried using an iPhone for a week and the keyboard just doesn't work for me. I'm sure I could get used to it if I really worked on it, but I LOVE the BB keyboards.

I hate to say it (because I used to love BB), but it you do anything on your phone other than talk/email/text, a BB simply isn't a viable option anymore. The browser sucks (it shuts down all the time for absolutely no reason), the apps suck and the OS is beyond horrible

Does anyone know of a good Andriod phone with a physical keyboard? I'd be willing to try that

THIS. I'd jump ship so quick if apple made a phone with buttons. You guys think that would ever happen? It seems like enough people are happy with the full touchscreen :(

Torch for the wife & iPhone 3gs still unbroken for me.

She got used to the BB from work.

It makes things a little simpler.

If you're slightly geeky you can jailbreak the iPhone and if you need to be on the bleeding edge then the latest and greatest Android, although that would be another battle to figure out who has it.

new iphone maybe september, most likely october.

iOS 5 is gonna cause some domination.
