Interesting Technology from M-Benz (leave it to the Germans)

I was riding today and noticed at a stop light that a Mercedes Benz SUV had a little yellow light in its driver side mirror.

As I went to pass the SUV, I noticed that when I entered the driver's blind spot, a little red light appeared.

I realized that some MB SUVs have a radar with blind spot warning. While I worry that it may make some complacent, it almost feels like someone over at Mercedes Benz design is looking out for us.

According to the article, Volvo has developed similar technology.

Alot of cars have similar blind spot monitoring these days
Don't put to much faith in technology, dumb drivers are still dumb drivers only now the cars are smarter than them

yea my dads 2010 E-Class has it too..its pretty handy, when its red it means theres a car in the blindspot and if you try to give a signal and switch over it starts beeping, its in both the side mirrors. Theres also a function that vibrates the steering wheel if you drift out of the lane and a whole bunch of other cool ****...I love that car. It actually makes driving enjoyable. The best is plug and play usb music. Drag and drop any songs onto your usb and you're good to go, then if you want you can rip them right onto the hard drive.

My Chevy had a gas gauge and then a dash light to tell me to check the gauges and I suppose there could have been a beeper to tell me to look at the light that tells me to check the guages to see I'm almost out of gas which I would have known if I had bothered to think about the last time I filled up.

Kinda reminds me of the song I used to sing to my daughter about the itsy bitsy spider.

In theory it's good, but what happens when it malfunctions, and you are so use to it being there. Hell you don't even check the blindspot anymore, you just look out for the blinking dot, that will be the time you'll hit someone. Another example of being too reliant on technology, and how dumb and lazy the average driver can be.

No matter what car you're driving, you're trusting that all sorts of technology won't fail -- brakes, steering, airbags, etc. Why is this particular piece of technology any different?

So what happens when the light says your clear, mirror says you're clear, so without checking your blind spot you start to change lines. Oh wait, there's another vehicle changing into the same lane, at the same time as you. Damn that sucks...

Because it's not necessary, any driver licensed to be on the road should be able to check his blind spots and stay in his lane without computerized help. Brakes and steering are not something that you can do by turning your head ninety degrees

Exactly. The above things are needed to drive a car, this is just a comfort item, that instead can be extremely hazardous if you rely on it too much.

We rely on technology for safety all the time -- autopilot, elevators, airbags, and so on. It's completely arbitrary to draw the line at blind spot detection. Sure, it's not necessary, but neither is driving a car to begin with.

Although I don't have a vehicle with such a gizmo, I'm quite sure that it is scanning that area frequently enough so that it will give a warning the moment there is anything in that zone. The driver will, of course, still be responsible for taking the correct course of action, but that's the case with or without this gizmo.

Leave it up to the Germans to make a mirror complicated. Problem is, every other maker will copy them in the name of SAFETY. I don't know if millions of radar and laser spewing vehicles is all that safe.

Just give us automated travel pods already. Then people can text, cell, shave, eat, read and do makeup in the comfort of their vehicle, without the distraction of driving.

Someone here almost got killed by a Lincoln with this new fancy technology.

so someone gets used to this technology, gets in a habit of never doing a shoulder check, gets into a different car without this tech. old habits die hard.

Spot on.

You do realize that the character in your gif is actually applauding for all the wrong reasons, right? :)
