My bike's out of commission. A friend offered to lend me his old bike (uninsured) in the interim. Is it possible to insure someone else's bike under your name?
Ownership has to be under your name as well.
No it doesn't.
You can't insure someone else's vehicle because you have no interest in it.
The owner insures, you pay, and you be principle driver.
It's done all the time on commercial vehicles.
Yea, that's why they have to "sell" you the bike so you can insure it.
I would think commercial and personal policies would be a little different, no?
Dude, did you parents have to "sell" you their car when they put you on their insurance?
2above has it right. Owner gets a quote with rider's name on it. Rider pays owner for privilege.
The name on the ownership needs to match the name on the insurance policy. I think if you wanted to be insured on it, even under his name but as a principal operator, you need to live at the same address, as Nakkers said.

above way seems the best to check out...! but I have seen some folks "lease" from their friend.. and the ownership plate portion goes in the new riders name,, as does the insurance , there is no safety required.. and the ownership stays in the owners name.. check that out...His bike will qualify as a "Temporary Substitute Vehicle" under your policy. Whatever coverages you have on your motorcycle will flow to cover his motorcycle. Therefore, your policy is now covering his motorcycle, no ownership transfer is necessary.
How about this scenario
My buddy built a chopper (nasty looking beast) but can't insure it b/c he has a porshe, 41 chev, chevelle and a 60's Plymouth on the road. So his insurance will be too high. Could I insure the bike for him and he rides it (it would stay at my place). Or would I have to put it in my name?
Sorry for the thread jack
