Insurance

these will factor in insurance rate age, license (also how long you had it for), bike model, and a bit on location.

Also everyone has a different definition of decent rate. What are you looking to get?

All those are factors, but more importantly are your experience and postal code.

There's quite a few bikes that are black listed on several insurance companies. Super sport bikes with either a high theft rate or a high death rate due to inexperienced riders.

Cruisers and the sort will be much cheaper than sport bikes. It's not so much the make of the bike, but the CC and the style that will determine the cost.

State Farm is a good insurer for new riders. If you're 30+, then you have much more choices (RBC, TD, Riders Plus, etc) because of your age and cheaper premiums.

Make, model, manufacturing year, engine size, your experience, postal code, driving record and probably some other **** matters.

The SS bikes typically get a bad rep with insurance companies. I think that as long as you stay away from those, insurance rates tend to be reasonable. If it's your 1st bike, look for something smaller since it'll be more affordable and it'll be more forgiving to learn on. If you do get a bigger displacement bike, avoid the super sports bikes since the insurance pricing can be pretty extreme.

I just bought my 1st bike, a 2009 Suzuki SV650S and my yearly insurance is just above $1400/yr. Other bikes I was recommended for low insurance cost are all the 125-250cc and the GS500. I'm sure sports tourers like a Katana, Ninja 650R, EX500 are all cheaper to insure then the SS bikes.
