Couple quick questions guys, to get a decent quote should I be calling Insurance companies directly or a broker? or will the insurance company just palm me off to a broker anyway. I cant get any online quotes because all the companies websites ive been to have a heart attack when I try to enter full G and M license and then never held G1 G2 M1 M2 etc etc.

I know im going to get raped for car or bike the first couple years and ive kinda accepted it but is there anything I can do to lessen the pain ie: get a driving abstract for Aus over the last 5-10-15yrs?

How do you have a G or M without a G1 G2 M1 M2? Grandfathered in from the old system?

I dont think you can get quotes directly from insurance companies but there are exceptions (some companies only deal directly). Just look for a broker and she/he will probably give you the best rate from different companies.

We might be able to assume that he is from down under.

About the insurance... can't really offer any advice, except call a ton of brokers and see what they have to say

There are both direct writers of insurance and brokers that market to others. So, do both. Contact a broker/insurance company and advise them of your situation and see what information they need to give to xyz insurance company or their underwriting department for your experience. Depending on the insurance company from a given country, they insurance company here may accept a letter of experience.

The nice thing coming from Australia, the letter of experience is written in English. I'm aware of some companies accepting letter from foreign countries that needed translated. Sometimes the underwriters just don't accept them at all regardless.

I'm not sure about your licence. But, if the letter can validate your date licenced as well, that would be helpful and if the MTO does issue a full G, the insurance company may give you some credit for that as well.

Bottom line, you may find some broker or insurance company willing to work with you. Especially if you have other business such as a tenant's or homeowners policy, life, etc. Sometimes, you might find some underwriting creativity. Not a lot but, there could be some.

Hope this helps.

OP... A broker will be your best bet as they will shop it around to multiple insurers. There are likely very little to none that will account for your insurance history in Australia. Some will except US exprience. You may have a higher rate for about a year while you establish insurance exprience here. I would still mention and provided the exprience letter as the broker may be able to convince the underwriter to accept it, but no guarantees.
