Insurance question for a 19 year old new rider.

So Ive had my m1 for a month now. Will be taking safety course and going for m2 during spring. Looking at getting a CBR125R for next season. I'm 19 years old with my g2 clean record. I know insurance is going to be high but i'm wondering this.

My dad has had his M for 28 years, clean record, full G, and currently does not own a bike. He said he would put the bike in his name and under his policy, ride it , and put me as secondary if its cheaper that way, but would they overlook him and go straight to me and give us a stupid price still?

Or is there anywhere that would insure me for $180-200 a month? Id be decently happy with that

Thanks for the help.

You know your M1 only lasts for 90days right?

And there are going to be people that will tell you not to go this route with insurance and some will... I've seen it done my self is it 100% legit no but do able.

He can re-new it as much as he wants. I had my M1 for three years.

If you put everything under your dad's name with you as the PRIMARY driver you'd be 100% legit. He can't legally put you as secondary because you'd be riding the bike more than him, and that makes you primary. They WILL only primarily look at you to determine the rate, BUT, any discounts he gets for multi vehicle, multi product, etc. etc. they'll apply to your bike insurance, so it could be considerably cheaper than doing it on your own.

Wow.. Happy with $200 a Month...? Things have changed over the years...
I paid $175 a year for full insurance when I was 19!

Anyway do as Jamie says. The multiple discount will help you out.

Yup, your dad can be the owner and policy holder but you need to be the primary operator. It'll be significantly cheaper than doing it on your own, but not anywhere near as good as your dad's rate would be without you on the policy.

Not to hijack but how does this work? Is there a fee involved everytime you renew and do you have to go in every 3months to renew?

Yep, $7.50 every three months. Eventually you figure out there's only 3 actual tests, so you just say "which test is it today? b? ok, it's a,a,c,b,a,a,2 years, snowplow, yield, divided highway" boof M1 again ;)

Well that seems like a moderate waste of money

So If I put the bike in my dads name and insure it under his policy but have me as primary I will still get a decent price compared to having it all in my name?

I wouldn't call it "decent" because it'll still be rape, but it won't be as bad as if it was on your own.

Depends on your definition of "decent"

I felt having to pay ~$3000 for the year on my SV650 was ridiculous. Others would love that rate.

Figured so why I'm starting on a 125 for this upcoming year. As long as I can get $200 a month or less id be happy.

Thanks for the help guys.

My dads current insurance company wants $3000 even with all his stuff bundled on a 125 so guess ill have to shop else where.

Yikes, I was hoping it would be better :(

It'd hard to do it legally and still have a good rate for a noob.

Not old as you yet , started riding this season. 1989 FZR400 insurance wasn't too bad, $1809/ yearly - Liability only though. However, sold my bike(decided to save my insurance money over the winter to buy another bike) upgrading next season. If the bike is not too expensive try only liability.

Whose your insurance provider?

Go for liability coverage if you are really on a budget and can't spend much more than $200. You still have option #2 and that's through your father's insurance. Get an insurance quote from your father's insurance provider. Hope you'll get a good deal.

OP, if you can wait a year the insurance would be a lot cheaper. And i would go liability only for a CBR125.

Think I could get 200 a month this upcoming season on the cbr125 liabity only, Got into the last motorcycle course of the year this weekend and wondering if that would help

You would see the discount 1 calendar year from when you got your M1. That applies for insurance through Jevco.
