Insurance on sport bikes >600cc, options?

I just received a quote from State Farm for a zx-9 of $1800/year. This seems ridiculously high to me. I was told by the agent that its because the zx-9 is a large engine, which I understand I just didn't expect the quote to be that high.

I could go with a standard or sport - touring bike but the zx-9 really appeals to me.

What other options are there for large displacement sport bikes?

I'm 28
GM License
G license held for more than 5 years
continuous insurance for more than 6 years
M3L (North York)
No tickets

Was that for full coverage, or just basic coverage? I presume the quote was for full coverage, because that's substantially more than what I'm paying with State Farm for a ZX10R but with only basic coverage.

How securely will the bike be stored? It could affect either your theft insurance, or whether or not you want to put theft coverage on it.

State Farm so far has been going by displacement only, so any other bike in the same displacement class will cost in the same range. If you want cheaper, you have to go smaller.

If you get a multi vehicle discount State farm will give you a nice discount on top of that.
It sounds about right for an engine that size though.

Liability only. Bike will be stored in a locked garage.

I just did an online quote though TD Meloche Monnex using my university alumni discount for a Bandit 1200, and it came out to be $3000.

It looks like I'll be doing a lot of shopping around.

The quote seems about right. Based on your age, SF is your only option for a SS bike. As Brian P mentioned, if you want to go cheaper, you have to go smaller.

Combine your car with SF and your bike premium will drop by about 40%.

That's messed up. Either find a good insurance broker or go down in displacement. Or try moving your life and house/rent insurance with SF if that helps. At your age you should be paying considerably less IMO.

Life / Home / Condo / Tenant insurance will not reduce your SF motorcycle premium; however, they will reduce your CAR insurance premium. Since the OP doesn't have a car, then combining his Life / Home / Condo / Tenant with State Farm will not do him any good.

The only combination discount offered by SF for the motorcycle is when you also bring your car to them.

Try calling them.. Online quotes are usually wrong.

Its the same quote. I am currently with TD Meloche Monnex for my sv650 and my online quote was the exact same over the phone. Sadly, insurance for a Bandit 1200 really is $3000 with them.

I think the quote is right !! im 28 perfect record on a zx10 basic liability for my is 156 bucks a month with satefarm and thats just the bike. Thats $1872 / year

3 years ago it was 127 / month i was 25 and only m2 go figure ?

Considering I'm paying about the same (couple hundred lower) on my 650R and I'm only a year younger, it sounds like a decent rate to me.

The reason for the increase from $127/mo to $156/mo:
  • 25yo is rated the same as a 28yo, thus your rate won't decrease due to your age
  • M2 is rated the same as an M, thus your rate won't decrease due to your M
  • Rates have risen in the last few years.
You've seen an average increase of 7% per year which is a little on the high end, but not out of the ordinary.

Damn I'm paying $85/month for my gsxr600 and I'm 25. Is it double the premium if I got a liter?

Statefarm is probably your best bet.
Also, I would take your postal code down man..I dont know about you, but I dont like revealing where I live on a public forum.
Do I spot a dark purple cadillac? *stalker*

Good luck on your hunt for insurance though..I had to sit out for a season until rates became reasonable. You're over 25 so thats a good thing.

See viffer, another one that states sub 100$/mo for a 600SS

where the **** are people getting these rates???

im $120 a month on a zx6...give me a freaking brake.

unless you have your car with you insruance company i have yet to get lower than 110 per month on a 600cc.

late 20's, I pay $1100/yr for an 08 CBR 1000RR, w/ comp @ SF (house + 2 cars too). Clean record. If I did liability only it would be just over $1000. A 40+ year old friend is about 1000 on an '02 ZX-9 w/ liability only through primmum.

Mine w/out my car at State farm is $117/month but with the car it is $71 on my F4i.

$120/mo without your car is actually quite good.
