Insurance for young rider

I am trying to find someone to insure me for my 1987 KLR 250, but no one is even taking a look at me since I am 16. The only place that said they would insure me is TD. But since I am 16 I had to fill out a quote application which is taking forever (its been about a month or so since i sent it out). So i just want to know if anyone knows a good broker or company that will insure me or if i have to wait a year to ride.

I hope you haven't bought the bike already -- it's VERY tough to find insurance at 16yo, even for a much smaller bike. You'd be much better off with a 250cc bike (and even still, finding insurance will be difficult).

TD should be providing you with a quote . . . this whole written application rigmarole is their unprofessional way of saying they don't want to write you; however, by law, they must provide you with a quote. I thought the Ontario Reform from Sep10 was supposed to take care of this issue, but I'm not sure what was actually passed. Refer to FSCO recommendation #7:

http://www.fsco.gov.on.ca/en/auto/5yr-review/Documents/FiveYearReviewReport.pdf

A broker would know better than I would what the rules are regarding fair practices when quoting.

Call TD and express your frustration that they haven't provided a quote in a reasonable amount of time. If they are jerks, then ask them how you could contact FSCO to deal with the matter.

Hey Everyone,

New to the forum. Anyone have an idea what I can get for a 2002 Ninja zxr. State Farm quoted me at 260/month. Im 22 (5 years experience), G, M2 second week in April. Not sure what it would cost if I bring my car over, still trying to shop around.

Thanks!

Bring your car over and you'll be saving about 40%. Its pretty much one of the more affordable options insuring a SS being under 25.

Which statefarm rep was this. Please pass that number on because I got quoted $5500 with 2 minors I have had a full G for 5 years and full M for 1 year with TD. I turn 22 this May

The SF rep shouldn't make the difference as they all enter the same numbers into the same program, You 2 tickets are what will raise your premiums to what they are.

The difference would be from you being in their "Plan B" policies vs "Plan A" for those with a clean record. If you were to sign with SF, they will also tell you that if you get in to an at-fault OR get another minor ticket, they'll drop you.

1 ticket makes a huge difference in premiums with SF.

"Plan A" with statefarm only applies if you have a car with them. If you don't insure a car with them you're on "plan B".

Really? I always thought you are moved to Plan A if you have a flawless record.... Guess I learn something new everyday.. Regardless, the tickets are probably making a huge difference. At least thats what my agent said with my policy. He referred to it as expensive and not ideal due to my record.

I just googled the first SF rep that came up. Not sure if different reps give different prices though.

Reps should not be giving different prices, but it doesn't hurt to call around. I find the quality of knowledge varies. If you need an agent let me know and I'll hook you up.

If you don't have a car with them, you can have up to 2 tickets on "plan B" with no effect on premium. With 3 tickets, they won't insure you. "Plan A" only applies if you have a car with them and no tickets.

Guess its a bit different for me with an at-fault in a car and ticket in a car but only insuring the bike...
