Welcome to GTAM you noobie types! There is so much misinformation out there on things like what type of bike to start on, insurance rates, licensing and the rider training course. I'm here to help. Been riding for over 16 years and deal with brand new riders every single day, guiding them through the process from scratch. Some stuff might seem obvious but its not. Way more info you need to know than I can post here so for even more details free to email me at: moto@nfp.com
Lets start with the Rider Training Course.
Book the Rider Training Course BEFORE you even get the M1
Wait... what? Yep you heard me. Especially right now during the winter /off-season. So many people write the M1 in December or January just to later realize that the M1 only lasts 60-90 days. Finally April or May rolls around and you need to line up to write the M1 test all over again as it has expired. You do NOT even need an M1 to BOOK the course, you just need to have an M1 license to TAKE the course. So for example if you book the course first and your class date is for April 15th you now know you have up until that date to show up with an M1, only doing it once. In fact you can write the M1 on the Wednesday then do the in-class training on the Thursday and actual rider training on the Saturday & Sunday, insured and on the road at M2 rates on the Monday (you do not need to wait the 60 days here).
Take the Rider Training Course BEFORE you buy a bike!
Some people still think they need a bike for the course or that they need to "practice" ahead of time. NO NO NO. The schools provide their own little beat up 125cc and 250cc bikes so you can learn from the ground up in a closed lot under the supervision of professional instructors. In fact the first training exercise starts with the engines off just so you can feel the weight of the bike. Its not like a car and its better to drop their crappy bikes in a parking lot than you smashing your bike (with you on it) on the street. Not only that but on the course they let you try different styles of bikes. I know a bunch of people that went into the course thinking they were going to buy this or that and then want something totally different after trying bikes on the course.
Rider Training Course and Insurance!
Not only will passing the course get you a HUGE discount (for first 3 years) and best insurance rates, it also gets you on the road way quicker. Its not about M1 or M2, its all about the Rider Training Course. We can insure a brand new rider at M2 rates as soon as they PASS the Rider Training Course, even same day.
You do NOT need to wait the 60 days for official M2 status. Book that ASAP in the Spring as soon as the schools announce their 2021 schedule!!
