Input on road racing neck braces?

I've been looking at buying a EVS R4 neck brace for the KXF but I'm also wondering whether it's a good fit for road racing / track work. If it can make me safer and it's not too expensive, then why not... amirite? I will say that the hardshell back protector actually makes me a better rider, because there's something for my core to press against and it gives me more stability on the bike - the same is true for the neck brace on the motoX track (for the neck, obviously).

Your thoughts/experiences?

With being so leaned forward, won't the helmet contact the brace and prevent you from looking far enough down the track comfortably?
I don't race asphalt, but I was wondering why I've never seen it.

I am considering the roadrace Leatt device. Joe Ohara and Dan Dubeau have been testing them endurance racing in SOAR and say that they arent intrusive at all

There is a new Air Bag System. These are an alternative to the neck brace. The new air bag systems being used deploy around the neck at the time of a crash which help protect from neck injury. The system is a compact vest so there is no rider restriction that might be found with allot of the braces, as well there are no adjustability issue that are also found with the neck brace as they are very difficult to get the right fit. The system is called "Hit Air".

I got the Leatt roadracing neck brace from bluestreakracing.ca and find it's easy to adjust, unobtrusive, easy to take on and off. I wear it on the street with a ZZR600 Kawasaki.

And of course I am a bluestreakracing.ca fanboy.

The EVS brace looks like a very good brace, although I have not used one before. As omnivore mentioned in his post, I have been using a Leatt StX road brace this year, and have nothing but good things to say about them. I have found that there is next to no interference from the brace. It took me less that a session to get used to wearing in. 3 rounds into the season and I don't even realize that I am wearing it. There are different size options, so you need to make sure you get fitted properly.

I use mine in conjunction with a Joe Rocket 1 piece suit (no speed hump) and an Knox Aegis back protector. The nice thing about the Leatt STX is that it is designed to work with a suit that has a speed hump, and because the supports run down the back of the shoulders as opposed to the spine, there is room for your back protector. From looking at the EVS you may run into problems with clearance for a back protector or a speedhump or both.

Best advice is to head out to your local retailer (Royal Distributing typically has stock of both as well as the Atlas and A-star braces), bring your gear so you can try them on fully outfitted. It would suck to buy one that doesn't work with your gear.

Any off-road riders I know consider the EVS to be a POS.

The problem I find with the neck braces is that there is currently no safety standard they are tested for. I feel they are definitely a good piece of safety equipment and will make riding and racing safer, but there is currently no way to know which one's work and which one's don't.

As far as fitment, it'd be interesting to see someone try an Atlas with a race hump. They are designed to not sit on your spine to begin with so they might work well with racing suits.

ARE THESE THINGS FREAKISHLY UNCOMFORTABLE?

Are the safety benefits unsubstantiated?

my question....

Why aren't these worn by street riders???

whats the downside?????

Canadian made too.

Curiosity got me and I had to check. i was dissapointed to learn that they are actually made in Taiwan. i was hoping they were canadian made, but no such luck. I just tried one on for the first time today. I like the design a lot, but they feel quite heavy to me. Seem much heavier than the Leatt STX.

with a half a season under my belt wearing the STX, I do not find it uncomfortable at all.

As for why people don't wear them on the street? most street riders don't even wear proper jackets let alone a $400 brace.
