Inguinal hernia recovery

Anyone ever had an inguinal hernia surgery, and how long did take you to get back on the bike?

Just had mine today and I'm wondering if I'll be able to squeeze any more rides this year.

4 Weeks to be safe.... me on the other hand with the Sciatica it is now over 4 weeks of Chiro, and still limping on left leg so no shifting gears... meaning no riding :(

I recently recovered from a Herniated disc which I initially visited a chiro and I honestly think she made it worse.

Have you tried going to Physio at all? After my first visit, I immediately felt improvements.

Chiro's are quacks, or at least the one I saw was. @ Artois, lator-illa is right, physiotherapy will probably help you out much more.

Crazy idea: ask your doctor. Going to the internet for bad medical advice is what Americans have to do.

Doctors don't know everything. You'd be surprised how many doctors there are that are clueless about backpain.

my suggestion is going to your family doctor then a few walkins and see what the majority say. try to get referred to a specialist maybe.

lol, i'd still take a dr's recommendation over that of an internet forum for motorcycles.

I had one done at Shouldice (sp?) and was in back to full duties within days. Able to ride within a few days. But that's a supersport so far more comfortable than a cruiser. Maybe it depends on what you ride?:D

If you had it done in a hospital, the doctor's advice may be anything from a couple of weeks to couple of months. Shouldice are believers in exercise to speed recovery and will only operate on you if you are reasonably fit. they have you up and walking within hours of surgery. YMMV.

I have been to bad ones as well, and they only make things worse. But when you do find a good one they make a huge difference.

I did ask my surgeon and he said it was the first time someone asked him that, and that in a couple of weeks should be ok. I was just wondering what other people's experience was.

Yup same had a double at Shouldice and within 24 hours they had me up and moving around. Was playing pool and riding the exercise bike in 48 hours. If you had it done at Shouldice i'd say a week since the way they operate there is no chance of issues with it coming undone. If it was at a hospital I'd say at least a few weeks.

You may want to look into an osteopath. they do not manipulate bone so no cracking. My boss had great results with one, could barely walk from sciatica one day and the next he was fine. In natural medicine you could say an osteopath is the equivalent to a chiropractor only more gentle.

As for Shouldice? I wish all hospitals ran as efficiently. It felt like a country club, I had a fantastic experience there, repaired 2 hernias over a 5 day period.

my dad had his done at Shouldice (don't remember what kind of hernia though, if it matters). and he was up and around quite fast. if i had to say somewhere between a week and 2 weeks, depending how you're feeling. just don't go pushing it and pop some stitches or something.

Why are you talking about back, osteo and **** like that when an inguinal hernia is something relating to your ****ing balls. Well, not really, its about 3 cm from there: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inguinal_hernia

Anyway, wait one month, its the time I did after mine last year. If you do too much exercise you will have blood in your semen. It WILL scare to **** your girlfriend/wife/one night stand, anyway, mine did. Your doc should have told you that, mine said to do nothing for two weeks and then start doing your business as usual but no gym after a month start slowly.

A year later it is still painful when I workout too much or push too much when I take a sh*t.

I didn't realize I had an inguinal hernia till I did a half ironman about 7 years ago. I was in absolute agony riding my bike and couldn't understand why I had a growth coming out my groin. I did the last 25kms standing up. I didn't get the surgery and the same thing happened the following year.

I suggest that you're conservative with your recovery.

I didn't know about Shouldice. My gf had her done last year and she had a great recovery, so I decided to do with the same Dr.

Second day and I'm in a lot of pain. Can't even get off bed... But I'm slowly getting better. We'll see in a couple of weeks.

I didn't know about Shouldice.

Best hernia center in the world. People come from all over for treatment, including the US. ( you don't hear about Shouldice, Sick Kids and Mount Sinai on Fox news).

chiropractors, osteopaths... it's all BS, and not anything near science. Most of the "success" of those a-holes is the fact that pain is related to inflammation, which will just go away over time anyway. Many of those guys do more harm than good.

An inguinal hernia is a stress tear. The best thing is to take it easy and let it heal, let the mesh get grown over and healed. Too soon and you could tear it again.
