Inflating your tires

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if the air compressors they have at gas stations work on bikes or not? I heard about 90 degree valves on tires that make it easier to access but mine don't have them. Is there an adapter of some kind you need?

Sorry for the obvious question but couldn't find any existing info online.

Thanks,
Al

Yes, they do.

No adapter needed; just bend the tube around your brake discs (if needed), and firmly press onto the valve, until the pressure meter pops out and there is no "hiss" from leaking air.

Do not rely on those built-in pressure gauges on the pump; buy a tyre pressure gauge from canadian tire, or any gas station. The cheap slider ones are great, although I replace them every few years.

It's a bit tricky to get a good seal on the valve stem while flexing the hose around the rotors but it fits. Agree with above, get a proper gauge and keep it under your seat. The built in gauges at air pump stations are horrible and can be off by as much as 20 psi in my experience. Ridiculous I know.

Thanks everyone for the helpful responses.

I got a digital tire pressure gauge from CT that works great.

Buy a bicycle pump, a proper gauge and set your pressures before you leave.

I went through 3 digital gauges from crappy tire and they all were useless. spend a few extra dollars and get a good analog guage.

go somewhere and get nitrogen, helps the tire last longer.
once they heat up and the pressure raises you will be wearing down the center faster.
I dont use it in my daily drivers but I always use it in my race car and my bikes.

spent $20 on a nice campbell tire infater with gauge.....for my compressor accessory. It gets used on a regular basis. All metal too :)

Me too! WTF is it with those!! Use em like 10 or 20 times and either they die with their non-replaceable batteries, or they give really wild PSI readings?!?

I bit the bullet and got a good gauge :( http://aggracing.com/store/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=54

Liquid filled gauge, and it's nice it's got the little vent button so I just over fill my tires slightly, then bleed out some air until it's perfect.

And OP, if you're using the gas station pumps, make sure to blow out a bunch of air before you start putting it in your tire, to get rid of all the moisture built up in the line.

I use a custom mix of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen, 1% argon plus some other gasses but thats all below 1% of the total

LOL!!!!!!! :D

TAFB, that gauge looks sick. I might have to order one.

And yea, the CT/Walmart digital gauges suck. They either break or don't work well in cold temperature so I moved to an analog and never looked back.
