Importing for track use only.

I've imported a few bikes from the U.S. following the steps of the write up on here, but those were all bikes that would pass RIV inspection and had clean US titles. I completed the RIV program and ended up with clean Ontario ownerships.

This time I'm looking to import a bike that has a clean US title, but it will be strictly for the track and I don't need a 'street-able' Ontario ownership.

I searched and found this thread but it wasn't much help.

Can someone point me in the right direction.

Thanks,
-Richard

Hey Richard,
If you're importing for track only, and you'll never put it on the street (yourself or if you sell). Then you can import as a parts. Its a different form and you don't go thru RIV. You won't get an Ontario ownership either. You just keep the American title for proof of ownership. You save a bunch of money this way too. The downside is that once you import it as parts, you can never title it here.
Go to the RIV site and click the salvage/parts vehicle tab, that should help.

^^

You will want to fill out a form 3, instead of a form 1 to import the bike as a pile of parts.

You will never be able to get an Ontario title for that bike but the import process is far simpler and cheaper.

Like Caboose said
Form 3 - parts only
pay your HST at the border
you are also required to go online and pay a $75.00 RIV fee for parts only import

you are also required to go online and pay a $75.00 RIV fee for parts only import
This part is incorrect

All you need is
Form 3 - they will give it to you at the boarder
Pay HST - at the boarder

Bob is your uncle

I did this a couple of months ago for my race bike

Not starting a pissing match here but
have another look at your form 3 section 11 under the declaration
$75.00 charge you are to go on to RIV.ca to pay - Quebec pays $81.00
If you are to follow the letter of the law or procedure in this case.

You don't pay the RIV fee at the border. But I had RIV chasing me for mine months after I imported my parts only bike. Maybe they just haven't got around to harassing you yet Caboose, but they will.

So just to clarify, there is no need to fax the title in 72 hrs in advance or get a recall clearance letter.

1. Show up at the border, any border crossing of my choice, with the bike and a title.
2. Fill out form 3.
3. Pay my HST.
4. Pay RIV fee.

Okay, now is there a way to get an Ontario 'branded' ownership for the bike? Like going through the RIV process but not completing the federal inspection with Crappy Tire? Wouldn't this be the way that requires a racing org to write a letter that the bike will be used strictly for track purposes?

If you want to export and import it legally then yes you need to send the documentation to US Customs at least 72 hours in advance. If you only want to import it legally then just show up wherever and whenever. For a parts only bike you do not require a Recall Clearance Letter. However once you import it as a "parts only" bike then thats what it is. You'll never get an Ontario branded title for the bike. This is my understanding based on a lot of reading and importing of cars and bikes. If in doubt though call RIV. They answer the phone, unlike other Government offices.

I have never done a parts only import, I didn't know there was a RIV fee so if other people are saying there is then I guess there is.

My current bike the frame came from Kawi Canada, the rest came across the border in the back of my car (no frame so no VIN) so there was no import procedure required. Car load of parts so I just paid 13% tax.

FWIW - 2 weeks ago I tried to get a "branded" ownership at MTO for my legally imported parts bike I am
using for the track.
I was told that although they used to provide these in the past - as of roughly 2 years ago they are no longer allowed to issue them. - forget the letter from any racing organization - no benefit.
If you plan to take the bike back and forth to the USA I have read somewhere on here that there is a CUSTOMS office you can take the bike to for inspection and a declaration that the bike is already imported.
Without this documentation you run the risk of having to import the bike again . . . makes no sense to me if you have the original import docs but it might be a risk none the less.

Y38 form. The office at Lester B Pearson hands them out. You need to have the bike with you of course for the officer to inspect.

i asked the border officer when importing my parts bike, do i need to pay the RIV fee, he said no, just whatever you are paying right now. So if he was wrong, the point is that i didn't have to pay it and no one has asked me for it yet

How long ago did you import your bike? It took them over 12 months to finally get round to chasing me for mine.

Maybe the guard either ticks a box on the form or forgets to tick a box. Maybe it's the luck of the draw. All I know is, according to the RIV wensite, there's a RIV fee to pay ($75) which is not paid at the border but paid afterwards. Is there anything in the paperwork that the customs guys gave you? If you don't have to pay then more power to you. Paying $75 to register a bag of bits is a rip off anyway.

Yea the website also says that you only pay the PST and at the boarder you get hit with the HST instead.

I only did it in April this year so we will see if they come chasing after me, I will check the paper work tonight when i get home and let you know if there is something mentioned on it, Or I will bring it to Mosport on Wednesday, I will be pitted beside Jay

Don't go to the trouble. If you get away with it then good for you.

Looking forward to seeing you and the Brooklin Massive on Wednesday.

Not in, or around, my trailer. You pervs can do what you want. Just don't leave a mess.:D

Where are you guys finding your track bikes in the states? I know the usual ebay, and craigslist, but are there any track specific forums like cherrypickerracing, just an american version. Thanks in advance for any help.
