So I picked up a GS500 last summer as my first bike and have been having a blast. I guess they're seeing how much fun it is and want dive in to riding too. We swing by Kahuna today and they were looking at a few bikes they thought looked good. They're leaning towards doing a lot of 2-up riding and so we were checking out a Vulcan 900. Seems like it would have decent power for both of them, but not too much that they'll be in danger. Should they be looking at anything else? I'm just starting to look into that whole cruiser line of bikes, it never really appealed to me before.

If they have never ridden, I am not sure if I would let them 2-up in the first season.

What does it have to do with what they are made of?? They can be made of steel for all I care. It's the experience. I haven't seen a rider who would go 2-upping in their first season, at least for the long rides. It's the experience that matters. Riders need to feel their bike, need to have experience riding on their own before picking up a passenger.

The passenger can control the bike just by turning to look at something. If they rider doesnt have the experience to be able to handle themselves how can they handle a passenger.
Not to say it isnt doable, just puts both people at a much higher risk.

Time varies person to person. But if you care about who will be sitting on the back then you will take whatever time nessesary to build your skill to a level where you are very confident. Your putting a persons life in your hands and that shouldn't be something taken lightly.

Really didn't think this would go where it did, lol

I've explained 2-up riding to them, and how tricky it'd be. I'm pretty sure they'll get a decent amount of riding time before they get into the 2-up riding

My initial plan for riding last year was

A. Do not hit the highway within the first season.
B. Do not go past my neighborhood within the first week.
C. Do not speed.
D. Do not two-up w/ my gf.

Broke A a week later when I got ****** off.
Broke B the second day I had the bike and went to a friend's house.
Broke C when I broke A.
Broke D shortly after breaking A.

I sort of had a similar plan when I started late last summer.
Didn't brake A, broke B the first afternoon I rode, broke C a few weeks after that, didn't break D yet. That's mostly because of the g/f.

Ahaha great.

Don't get me wrong though, I HATE two-upping with a passion. It prevents me from doing stupid things in fear that I might murder the passenger (hard braking, speeding, swerving pot holes for fun, and high speed turns).
