Get insurance now or later

EDIT:

so i am in a dilemma here. I am going to get my bike on Monday and not sure what i should do from what i see.

1) Get a temp plate and get it certified and everything, and enjoy riding it till it lasts.

2) Tow the bike and get it transferred as unfit

but if i do the first option then i am paying 1 payment of 313 from now to Feb and when i get my renewal it would be 3743 from Feb 2013 to 2014.

The thing is i am still not at 1 full year experience yet April 8 would be where i it full year mark. So if i go with option 1, would i get screwed later?

Not sure if everything makes sense. Any input?

Thanks

How will it work if i get insurance in September when riding season is over in about 1~month?

I am thinking about buying a bike around this time, so that it would be cheaper for the cost of bike. Interested in the 250 ninja.

Also i know that if you wait for 1 year from your m1 insurance is cheaper. So i did a online quote with td and they gave me 2,276.00.

Does that sound right?

Online quotes are useless. Give them a call. TD will be high, try State Farm and John Duffy.

State farm looks at your driving record and gives a quote on your G license experince, so if you have 5+ years and a clean record you are in good standing to get cheap insurance.

I got quote $93/month on the bike i plan to buy (2004 GSX-R 600) but i am 25 years old with 5+ years of driving experience

TD looks at your riding record and if you have proper riding experience and the appropriate M licensing, TD will be cheaper.

Also your age will play a huge factor as most companies give a huge discount at 25 years, but i think TD does it at 30 years.

So...

your action items are to "call" no online quotes insurance companies from the insurance sub-section and go from there.

Cheers

yeah that sounds about right, but i thiink you might be able to get a better deal at state farm if you qualify?

sorry to mention. I don't qualify with state farm, only had my G for about 2 years now.

So what would be the best way to carry the bike when you first buy it private? Tow?

I'd say the best option is to have the guy to ride it to you lmao
Or you'll have to get it insured, safetied in order to get plates to ride it home.
Otherwise you can tow it -> more expensive

TD will be great value now because of how they write the policies.

I just picked up my GSX650F and paid $254 for now until the end of Jan.

Next year will be a different story. Either way you wont be paying much to insure with TD from now until the new year.

it works by you buying the bike now and purchasing insurance next year.

can i register the bike under my name as soon as i buy it and then insure it next year?

Yes.

If its coming certified you can transfer the ownership with the Brand of FIT and they wait until you are ready to insure it

If its not certfied you will have to get it transfered as UNFIT and they get it the safety cert to change the branding to FIT and then you will be able to plate and insure it

When did you get your G1. It`s 5 years since you got your G1 not your Full G. If you got it when you were 16 then you should qualify.

These are your options.

Option 1

1) Buy Bike.
2) Get Safety (unless it comes with a valid one, Safety's are only valid for 36days from date inspected)
3) Get Insurance, get temp slip from them.
4) Go to MTO office within 6 days of purchase and take UVIP, Safety, Vehicle portion of ownership.
Register bike in your name as "FIT", get plates and sticker.
5) Put on bike and ride it.

Either tow bike to your house or get all the above done same day and ride from prev owners house.

Option 2:

1) Buy bike.
2) Tow bike home.
3) Within 6days take UVIP and signed vehicle portion of ownership to MTO office. Register in your name as UNFIT.
4) Store bike till you wanna get insurance.
5) Get Insurance.
6) Tow bike to get safety or have Rosey Toes come to your home.
7) GO back to MTO office with Safety and UNFIT ownership and Ins papers. Get bike made "FIT" and get plates and sticker. Go ride.

I don't see how you would be "getting screwed later" by insuring now. Ask the insurance agent if the renewal price in Feb is pro-rated to take in account your 1yr experience in April ( Look @ that as Full rate Feb to April, then "reduced" rest of year).
If it is not and they won't prorate it, I would be waiting till April to get ins. Just make sure you hide that bike good since if it isn't insured and get stolen you are SOL.

ahhh so the key here is "pro-rate"

Does option 3 working?

1) Buy bike
2) Get insurance
3) Go to MTO and get temporary plate
4) Put temp plate on bike and drive to get safety
5) Bring safety to MTO
6) Good to go

I know for this option its best if doing when bike shops are closed or too busy and such.

Also i am getting quote from TD and they say the renewal price doesn't include pro-rate, so i am thinking getting insured now till Feb and then have a 1 month gap without insurance until i hit the 1 year mark.

Not sure if that would blow up in my face

Dude, some insurance companies will refuse to insure you if you will have a gap in insurance like that. Quite a few people on this forum have experienced this.
