I WOKE up and read this...

A tenured professor at Mount Royal University is cancelled for expressing opinions. Another example of academic elite working to cancel free speech and censure anyone who might stimulate debates or points counter to the WOKE establishment.

While I neither follow or subscribe to the professors points of view, I'm happy to hear them and any further debate they might encourage. How do our young people get to understand that it's OK to have or listen to an opposing point of view if the establishment squishes those views first.

Kind of a Xi Jinpingish approach?

The weird part is that they seem to want to gouge and fleece the students at every opportunity to make more mana for themselves.

Kids graduate with crippling debt loads, while profs buy up vacation homes.

Some of the hurdles like deposit amounts for residence seem to be aimed at keeping the "poors" out, even if they're smart enough to get a full scholarship.

If the view you express is one of anti-capitalism, and the actions you take are full on capitalist, when will you be seen through?

Edit: Not sure I agree with the views the professor expressed, but . . .

The statement said the university is committed to fostering free speech and expression and hopes to be a place where opposing viewpoints can co-exist.

“The university unequivocally supports academic debate and will always defend the rights of faculty related to academic freedom. However, academic freedom does not justify harassment or discrimination,” read the statement.

Doesn't sound like she was fired for expressing her views....but for harassment and discrimination.

First , there is probably way more to this story than we are getting from media

Second, I don’t disagree with some of what she said . But possibly how she was saying it , but we’ll never know

Third , university is supposed to teach how to learn , study and think critically and alternatively. This is slowly fading in the effort to “correct “, which will be the death of thinking out side the box

Might vary from institution to institution. Generally, the right to free speech is upheld as long as that speech doesn’t cross over into incitement/harassment etc. Mount Royal is a bit different I do know that.

Ime, also dont bite the hand that feeds you. Something that is scientifically sound and does not cross into incitement/harassment has smoked careers in the past if it makes govt look bad (or is perceived to).

Reminds me of how Dr Bridle at U of G got banned from campus for speaking out against the vaccines.

Friend teaches theatre and singing at a Canadian Uni , he’s as lefty as you may think and occasionally gets grilled by students for not being current enough .

Yes there is a degree in song and dance , it grooms you for politics .

Al Jolson was a great singer and entertainer, whistled like a canary. He did a lot of good things for black entertainers in his time.

Unfortunately he wore blackface, common back then. One picture erases a thousand good deeds

if you want more info:

So, what does a professor of policy studies do for a job when they get fired? I assume they are considered spoiled goods at other universities.

I know a PhD that has lectured at various universities but is p***** that she can't get tenure because the old goats want their guaranteed for life jobs and won't quit, the main reason she wants tenure.

Tenure is tough to get these days unless you’re in a niche area and that niche just opens or the institution has a lot of retirees (does happen) or expands. Most people have to pay their dues somehow. I did…didn’t get tenure until in my 40s, before that it was contract after (thankfully) renewable contract.

As universities struggle to make ends meet , and look at restructuring . And exchange students (€$€£$ ) are harder to recruit the offers of tenure will get thin on the ground .

My pal has a 6 months work , 6 months doing something else and a 1 yr sabbatical every 3 so he can perform and stay current . Yeah that’s what he does. He’s pretty happy he doesn’t work 3 hrs a day and with no actual academia to score , well he floats in the ether. And gets to stay as long as he wants .

From the article above (and I agree with CC it's likely not the whole story) she sounds racist. There is no defense of residential schools.
