I think my bike died? Strange problems

I have 2007 GSXR600 and today it didnt turn on. I left the key in over night, but highly doubt it was left on. When I turn the key, the backlight of the display comes on, but no text. Bike makes no effort at all to try to come alive. Maybe battery if I left it on all night?

The day prior I noticed my bike was making a wierd smell while riding and even stranger was that when I turned off the bike, the bike was making a high pitch sound, like a kind of buzzer. Also I noticed that my leg was feeling an almost uncomfortable burning feeling. Like I was sitting on something stupid hot. Any ideas what the hell is going on?

My FI light came on a while ago. I thought it was a loose cable on the battery, disconnected and charged, light went away and bike was running fine.

Check the battery.

Check for shorts.

Take it to a mechanic.

This.

My first guess is an electrical short of some kind. That would explain the burning smell and what seems to be you being electrocuted, along with a mostly drained battery.

The first thing I'd do is disconnect the battery, and then start having a close look at any exposed wiring to look for fraying or exposed metal. Look for burn marks.

Was any electrical work done recently? Turn signals swapped out, undertail eliminator, anything else? A rookie install is the first place I'd start.

There's a lot more you can do from a diagnostic perspective, but it sounds like you don't have the knowledge to do diagnostics, and chasing electrical problems can be frustrating if you don't know what you're doing.

Take it to a mechanic.

I actually had this happen to me last night! My bike was on its stand the key was in the ignition for a week. The bike wouldnt turn on or anything or go into natural, if this is the same issue with you, get the bike on the stand and turn the back wheel and goes through the gears till it gets into natural and try. Once it goes into N it should making the charging sound, worth a shot.

You blew the stator.

Take off the stator cover (other side from clutch), it should be obvious.

When you replace the stator, test the rectifier/regulator, it's probably failed and fried the stator.

All you need is a multimeter to test the R/R.

Many bikes in this era used weak R/Rs that did a bad job at regulation sending too much power back to the stator at high RPM.
If you replace the R/R, don't use OEM, look for a MOSFET-type.
This is really common in mid-2000s bikes from many manufacturers. The only ones who got it right were Yamaha, who used MOSFET from the factory.

I recommend Rick's Motorsports. Both items are easy to just plug and play replace, assuming the wiring loom is not fried. You need to check both ends of all wiring in the loop between the battery, stator and R/R.

That's why there was a burning smell and why the battery got drained.

GSXRs are famous for this, your battery got cooked, thus the heat and stink.

Sounds like a stator problem. Pretty typical for this bike

I'm hoping it'll turn out to be something else just because so many people say it's the stator, lol.

How does everyone know it's not just the R/R and a blown battery?

OP you need to replace the battery first and take the stator cover off just to see. If it looks burnt it's garbage. If not start the bike with the new battery and see what the voltage is at the battery. If it's over 14vDC it's your R/R. If it's under you need to unplug the R/R and see what the voltage is from the stator (should be around 50vAC at idle).

We are GTAM members, we know everything lol

Derrick is right, this is the best way to make sure but it certainly sounds like the stator, hope is just the battery.

Wouldn't it be better to check those voltages before replacing the battery? Won't incorrect voltages damage it?

Happened to me a few years back on a 06 600.
Smell like rotten eggs and whistles like a train.
You need a new battery. But before u put that in u got to change the rectifier.
If I was u I would change the stator also at the same time.
That will go too really soon. There is a company in Quebec called rm Stators. Order from them u have it at your door the very next day.
Faster then any dealership. And cheaper.
Good quality stuff.
Pm me if u need help.
When u change the stator buy the gasket also.
And get some gasket maker from crappy tire.
U can be on the road in 2 days again.

Always the r/r stator in these bikes. Design flaw. Replace those two and the battery

Many bikes have r/r and stator issues.

Check things in this order:
1. battery
2. r/r (there are videos on YT that will show you how to test it) if it's bad, it could under-charge or over-charge your battery - overcharging is worse, and it could kill your battery... replacing battery only in this case will only get you few clicks...
3. check stator. You can check resistance on connections without taking the cover off (again, YT is your friend).

If all these are OK, it could be short somewhere, or fried relay, or in some cases, it could be as simple as blown fuse, or as bad as fried CPU.

Good luck.

Just smell the stator cover (opposite side of clutch). The smell is the windings burning. I would order a stator / rectifier - regulator and take the battery out and have it load tested at Canadian Tire. They do it free. If you're lucky the battery may be ok.

Any update on this? I've noticed people like to post mechanical problem threads, but never come back with a conclusion. That would be helpful for people in the future with a similar issues.
