i need help from a iphone 3gs guru?

I need to jailbreak and unlock a 3gs iphone from rogers. I cancelled my contract with them due to lack of signal reception. I asked them to unlock the iphone for me and basically they told me I would have to be under contract with them even though it wouldn't change the fact that I didn't get any signal reception?

I have firmware 4.2.1 and
modem firmware 05.15.04

Tried to search the internet for information on this but all the info seems so confusing and unorganized. One forum tells me to upgrade the baseband and then unlock it but not one website has suggested to update the firmware and baseband to a version where i can use the iphone untethered??

There is ways to upgrade firmware(4.2.1)without updating baseband(modem firmware). That's what you wanna do.

I jailbreak my own devices, never cared about updating my basebands for unlock, as I don't need to.
