I keep forgetting to turn off my signals

Went for my first ride today and everything went great. I felt very comfortable and in control of the bike right off the start. One thing I noticed is that I only remembered to turn off my turn signal about 50% of the time. It's something that we didn't even talk about in the rider training course I took. In fact the training bikes didn't even have signals or mirrors, probably because they would be broken off so regularly.

The indicator light is just out of my field of view when I'm riding normally, and I'm remembering my training and keeping my eyes up and away from the insturments.

Do you guys have any tricks that help you remember?

Connect the turn signal wire to the horn, that ill remind you! :D
Honestly, i hate it when i see a guy tooling along in the right lane with his left signal on.
You need to glance at the instrument cluster more often, the more you ride, the more habitual it will become.
Or you can buy a turn signal cancelling device, not too expensive, google it up.

what he said....... it well come natural in time

When I started riding, I had the same problem but after riding regularly, I naturally started to remember to switch it off after every turn. After a year, I would only forget maybe once every 500 turns - even if I do forget, I would realize that it was still on within about 3 seconds of finishing the turn when I glance down at the indicator.

When I first started out I had the same problem as well, so to fix it I got in the habit of hitting the cancel switch every few minutes while I was riding. Might seem like overkill, but it became just a normal part of riding, like clutching, shifting or braking. I don't do it as much these days, but it really trained me to view the cancel switch as an essential control of the motorcycle.

+1 that's how I do it as well. Just becomes second nature after a while.

Yup pretty common thing that goes away after a short time. I just got in the habit of hitting cancel after every turn onto a new street even if I didn't use my blinker.

Friend of mine is pretty bad with this though. When he starts up the bike, half the time his blinker is already flashing haha.

Glad to hear this is a common thing :) I guess I'm going to have to work on building a mental connection between upshifting/turning and hitting cancel.

It is definately a common thing! Been on many group rides where people have left their indicator on and running... happens to the best of us

Just look at your speedometer more often..

Just wait until you forget to put your kickstand up and try to start the bike, usually happens at a gas station, where girls are looking at you all Rossi style on your bike.

Remember, kick stand kill switch. That is all.

it drives me nuts when im riding with someone who keeps the signal going, i dont know why but it just bothers me. i keep hitting the cancel button every couple minutes out of habit

I do the same thing now too, I was so bad at leaving it on before.

The dude who safetied my bike did this and told me there's something wrong with my bike lol. He looked pretty red after someone pointed out the kickstand. Could've been the alcohol too, he was clearly intoxicated.

An embarrassing thing I do once in a while is hit the horn when I meant to cancel my signal. I get puzzled looks via the rear view mirror of the person ahead of me.

Did that once this morning. Luckily it was early and no one was really around.

Every one forgets to cancel - get in the habit of hitting the button after every turn and you are golden. I hit mine all the time even though my signals are self cancelling...LOL
My problem is leaving the key in the ignition...lights on and stopping for lunch. I leave the stand down and wonder why the damn bike keeps stalling. Heck I even forget to put the stand down sometimes. But when she is rolling I ride to survive.
