Here is a super mini review.

Cliff notes: Kicks huge ***.

Details: Did two track days, posted up the youtube vids. Everyone was like "dude, you should get a steering damper!" I'm like WTF, my 07 R1 came with one from the factory? Here's the vid, starting from a spot with a bit of wobble (there's lots worse elsewhere in the video).

Coming from an 08 R6 which was unstable as hell, I didn't worry too much about the wobble in my R1.

Anyway, I had a coupon I needed to use up and picked up a HyperPro RSC from MotoMummy (OEM location option): http://www.motomummy.com/hyperpro/hyperpro-04-08-r1-oem-location-rsc-active-damper/

OMFG amazing.

Install was super simple. I had to loosen the 8mm bolt for my clutch perch and rotate it up a bit, so I could get a 12mm socket into the stock damper mount to hold the lock nut while I undid the bolt from the bottom. That was the only tricky part of the installation! Everything else was using just the tools in the factory tool kit.

I set it to 6 clicks from "off" and it's awesome. Doesn't slow down my transitions at all, and as soon as it starts to shake the "RSC/Active" part kicks in and locks her up solid, works sweeeeeeet.

No pics of it on the bike yet, but it goes in the same exact location as the OEM one so just imagine a HyperPro in your favourite colour sitting down there, instead of the stock one ;)

Some peeps might ask "Why'd you go OEM location?".
1. Keep it out of sight. Lots of dampers get stolen off bikes around here.
2. I have a GPS mount that mounts to my steering stem and wanted to keep it.
3. I didn't want to have to mess with it each time I need to get under the tank.

I was going to buy one for my CBR but went with an Ohlins instead.
Only because after doing some reading, the Hyperpro tend to have leaking issues?
Not sure if it applies for the newer gen. but I wanted to be on the safe side.

Is there any "performance" differences between the OEM location and the top triple mount?

I'm not sure. I didn't see anyone do a back to back comparison of them. All you would need is the extra mounting kit, the damper is the same.

I never read of the RSC/new model ones leaking, and it's that "active" technology I wanted. You can have it set loosy goosey so you don't even feel it, then once it starts to shake it locks up solid :)

How much was your Ohlins if you don't mind me asking?

They're quite pricey for my bike $600+ for a new one, but I managed to get a great price on a used unit.
Still looking like new!

It's all about the looks right? lol :) As long as it's working like new, that's what counts!

Yeah, GP quoted me $700 for the Ohlins and $680 for the HyperPro so I ordered the HyperPro from MotoMummy for $288 on sale ($299 regular price) :D

1. Where is "around here" exactly? I guess that's the difference between random trackdays and club racing?
2. Good thinking, most mounts that come with timers go around/over the stem... I had to fashion one to go above it, but it wasn't too hard.
3. How often do you go under the tank, really? :p With my R6 flip-over a few weeks ago, the damper came out unharmed but the fairing stay/cluster area was demolished. If I had my Ohlins down there, it likely wouldn't have made it out alive.

The benefit to over-the-nut is more practicality..... more likely to survive a crash and the adjuster knob (Ohlins) is on the clutch side, so if I think I need more or less dampening, I can make adjustments on the fly while riding the bike.

In my humble opinion: the more control the device has, the less control you have. I'll take manual adjustment any day. You never want a "locked up solid" setting on a damper, I still experience some headshake if the front wheel managers to get up and land, but I'll never lose control. Think of it this way: if you're exiting a corner and experience a shake and the "auto" locks it up..... if it locks as "solid" as you say it does, you're more likely not going to finish the turn.

Also, I think Pro6 is a licensed Ohlins service provider, so whenever the damper needs a refresh, you can take it to them.

HP is probably a decent product, I haven't used it. It may be suitable to your needs/speed for the time being. I've got Ohlins on both bikes so I'm pretty biased, but how well it works on the F4 is why I got another for the R6.

I have the HP unit on my gsxr 1000 in the stock location and it works quite well, I've never had to adjust it or had any moments where I thought I needed anything "better". I've still had a small amount of head shake but it quickly disappears. I can feel the damper when I'm pushing the bike around in the pits and at pit speeds but once I'm in motion it isn't noticeable.

I have the RSC damper on all three of my Suzukis. The two K5/6 bikes are top mounted... annoying when you want to change the oil filter but they work great.

Reason for post: the leaking issue is an old one (2004/5?) and was addressed in later versions of the damper. Modern versions are not known for leaking - and mine haven't done so at all. Pricey? Yeah. They're all too pricey for what they are.

The GPR and Scott's dampers are also good units.

Toronto, it's my street bike (not too worried at the track days) ;)

I always friggen think, when I install my GPS mount "I shouldn't be going under the tank any time soon" but dammit I do. Gear indicator, gotta hook it up under there. SpeedoHealer, gotta hook it up under there. Disconnect stock O2 sensor, gotta do it under there. AutoTune/PCV, gotta hook it up under there. Seems every week I'm digging under my tank!

Ah, very good point then. I had track in mind, my mistake.

I go under the tank ALL THE TIME on my race/track bike... but when it was street I was hardly every there, then again it was totally stock.

The service intervals for the Scotts and GPR are far too short for me to ever consider using one.

I've only used them, not owned them..... what service intervals do they require, and what service? Is this just oil change, or parts? Curious.

~10hrs

Disssemble, clean, reassemble then bleed with some sort of vacuum tool.

On a street bike you could go well over 10hrs but a once per year refresh is probably a safe bet. My Ohlins damper gets a refresh once a year along with my forks and shock.

Basically it's like a miniature shock... or one of the adjustment aspects of it.

Oil, seals, o-rings, etc...

PS: Not sure where the other posters were shopping for Ohlins, but Baysideperformance has them for $560.

Hi Guys
Just to clear up some of the pricing issues. HyperPro make two styles of damper for many bikes. They have an OEM mounting and a tank top mounting and there is a big difference in price due to the amount of brackets needed for the tank top version. Jamie I'm guessing GP bikes probably quoted you the tank top version.
Also please don't forget us. We have a large selection of HP and Ohlins in stock and our pricing is competitive to bringing it over the border.
Cheers

Hey Tony. You're so damn busy it feels like I'm bugging you when I e-mail you, so I try hard to check your website first before I e-mail/call you. I looked on your website http://bluestreakracing.ca/steering-dampers/yamaha.html but didn't see the HyperPro listed for my 07 R1, so I went ahead and ordered it for $288 + $16 shipping from MotoMummy because I figured you didn't carry it.

Also, on your website, if I type in the search box "HyperPro R1" I get ALL kinds of stuff, not sure WTF is up with that :(

Tony can get almost everything!

If I'm ever looking for something that's not on his site I just email or call. He can usually get it ;)

Don't mean to hijack the thread, but out of curiosity, can the R6 also have it mounted in this stock location, or just the R1's? ...I have the same damper and I recently had the bolt that runs through the gas tank snap in half, flush with the frame. Let me tell you, that must have been the most fun I've had in a long time....:angry5:

Jamie please don't ever feel you are bugging me, busy is good. Even if you are only checking a price or asking about availabilty, it's ok. But I hear what you are saying and there are some changes coming over the next three months to help us handle the volume of calls, enquiries and orders. Also the web site was recently launched and they made a dogs dinner of the search function. It will get fixed but may take a little time. But we will be adding a lot more product to the site over the winter including several new and exciting products.

X-solja, no Hyperpro don't make a lower position for your bike, tank top is all they have. Did you get the bolt out? If not let me know, it's actually not to difficult to do and I'll give you the method to get it done.
