Nothing new.. During the nuclear war scare, several companies were selling ineffective dosimeters for radiation. A government report was published (not on that topic, but covered it) and the author was afraid of naming the companies because they had too much pull in the government and would have had his agency shut down, so the agency just published that many were ineffective, refused to identify them and included the instructions on building an effective do it yourself device. Corporate communism at its finest
