Huge difference in quotes on similar motorcycles

So I got a quote from the Personal for an Aprilia Dorsoduro 750 & a Ducati Hypermotard 796 and was astounded at the difference in premiums.

They wanted $6500/y for the Duc and $2800/y for the Ape... Is the 50 extra cc's in the Ducati really bumping the price up by almost $4k

I am speculating that they are using tiers like income tax brackets. So yes, it might very well be a higher tax bracket compounded by the fact that the vehicle gets crashed or stolen more than the other one. Ducati is a more recognizable name globally.

The age of 21 also plays a part in their tables of risk factors along with the postal code you live in.

Since Ducs are more popular, historically there will be more claims made against them and insurance companies are careful to integrate the history of a brand and/or model into their premiums. They extrapolate, based on the history, future claims and cover that prediction with a higher premium. :)

Wow, could have bought my first bike and the insurance both - twice - for the insurance cost on that Ape.

Aren't you the guy who said the gsxr 600 is for people who can't afford to insure a 750? Maybe you should look at something a tad cheaper like a 600. Those rates are ridiculous.

Insurance isn't required for this beauty, after a few beers it'll look exactly like a Kawasaki:

Yup, and I would be in that group of people who cant afford to insure a GSXR750 ($5000/year quote Statefarm) but would be able to insure a GSXR600 ($3500/year quote Statefarm) not that I would pay that much just to ride a supersport 600.

And trust me, I've looked at plenty of non-supersport bikes in the 599-699cc range and believe it or not it would cost me more to insure something like an SV 650 than it would to insure the Dorsoduro 750 with The Personal & TDMM for some reason...

That's insane. I thought sv's were supposed to be good on insurance. I'd be making some calls to brokers or other companies.

Do you have a few infractions against you? Maybe a DUI? Seems like a pretty huge cost you're being quoted! Did you crash your car into the insurance office and then as for the quote?

I got quoted on a V-Rod the other day for $1850 and that's with 2 infractions against my record. I'd suggest you keep looking.

they are, live in Whitby, 27, pay $750 for an SV (TD Ins) ,
the house and cars are with a different company so would be even better if I had them with td.

I just got a quote from td for these two bikes and they were both within $10 with the 2012. However with the recent power upgrade of the Ducati in 2013 it is now classed as super sport to the insurance companies. So I will have to stick with a used one down on power too.
