How's the Durham College M1 exit course?

Hey everyone, I JUST got my M1 permit about 2 weeks ago! Just bought a bike as well. Kawasaki Vulcan 500. I love it. Never ever been on a bike before, never driven standard. Complete noob. I decided that the best thing I can do is get properly trained by professionals, so Since I live only a few minutes away from Durham College, I signed up for the M1 exit course. Just wondering what I should expect, and if anyone has taken this course, how did you like it? How were the bikes and the instructors. Thanks!!

Like you, I had no prior experience on a bike besides bicycles and took the Durham course on May 3-5. One thing that I can say for sure is that although they teach you the fundamentals, it does not make you road ready by any means. I breezed through the course but being on the road is a totally different experience. Take it easy once you really get out there and be safe.

Drink lots of water, you spend a fair amount of time in full gear standing in a hot parking lot and will need it.

I found the course helped me a lot. I have a few friends that have been riding for years and have been showing me the ropes, but the instructors really make things simple and explain in detail what more experienced riders might forget to mention since a lot of it becomes second nature.

Thanks for the info!! Im taking the evening courses from 6-10 so I wont be standing in the hot sun all day ;) What kinda of bikes did they have? I have a cruiser and was hoping to learn on one at the course.

I did it a long time ago at Durham College, the bikes are probably still the same ones though, they were mostly dual sports 125cc, 200cc, 250cc. I think the only cruiser I remember in the lineup is the Marauder, if I were you I'd choose one of the dual sports for the course.

Yup, When I did my course a few years back, all they had were dual sports. I did mine on a DR200. It was a freaking blast!
Apparently, they are more lenient than RTI, not sure in what category exactly but it was a great course indeed. Learned a lot of things, dropped the bad habits and made some new friends that I still hang out with and ride with until this day.

I did the course last year on a DR200.
The course is taught from the basics and the instructors are good, knowledgable and easily approachable. The course is fast paced but is no problem to keep up with. I enjoyed it. The break up the in class and hands on nicely.

I took this course years ago and it was a pretty solid course. We had a variety of bikes (Some dirtbikes I forget what model, CBR125s and Suzuki Marauder 250s) I thought the course was well done and I had never been on a bike before. Things were well explained we got a lot of practice time and the test was easy. I ended up doing it again for my M test as well as I liked the instruction. But it really wasn't necessary.
