How Uber just sucks $ from canadians and pays no taxes.

"and possibly unravel our civilization".....really? Presumably the 80% is still taxed by the driver as income. So only 20% is not taxed as corporate tax. How much does eBay pay in corporate tax in Canada?

Some companies don't pay tax period. Steam and PSN come to mind...and I hope it stays that way!

People are desperate for alternatives after years of terrible taxi service. I've used uberX 3 times and every part of the experience was better than taking a cab.

this is the stupidest comment I've read ... why are you willing to accept paying taxes and leaving corporations off the hook to pay taxes in a country they operate ?

Here's an example for you of a simple case ...

if there is a requirement of $100 in taxes for the federal government to use for a budget to operate. in the past it would be $50 from private citizens and $50 from corporations. if corporations began to NOT pay then who's paying for the $100 for the government for it to operate ? THE CITIZEN ... and who's the citizen ? YOU !!!!

-- take this a step further, so now, that we have less money 'cuz we are not a corporation then you can only pay $80 since you would otherwise feel like your taxed to death then now we have to either A. run the government on $80 or B. go into deficit ... if we go into B then we're going into debt ... if we go with A, then we get services cut

which would you rather have ? I say go back to the root of the problem and have them PAY THERE PHUCKEN TAXES ...

There's nothing stopping anyone in Canada from starting their own Uber style service. The days of high priced cab fares are numbered though. People will not let Uber go and there is little the government can do to stop it. If Uber is kicked out, someone else will take their place.

If you drive a taxi you need to see the writing on the wall. Try as they might, the music industry couldn't save CD sales from Napster, LimeWire, and Bit Torrent. Things change, get over it.

We spend a lot of time on this site bitching and moaning about taxes... well a lot of these problems (revenue for the government) can be solved by figuring out how to tax Internet transactions like these, HST and Income Tax. There is a lot of lost tax revenue lost when these services are used, there are technology solutions and legal solutions to close this, we just need the willpower to do so. I am discussed at how easy this is to fix.

The other solution, you pay more taxes as a person. You get less services. You have to listen to the pissing and moaning of the right wingers that teachers and nurses need to make min wage because they are women...

As for the cab drivers, the playing field is not level, no way they can compete paying the proper insurance and license fees when the UberX drivers do not.

No, that's not true, they cannot compete because a taxi plate is artificially priced at $130,000 and even $150,000

But no one can blame the municipal government for those prices.

That's cheap. I think I've seen them for way more before. He'll if I ha the money I'd buy one a it's a good revenue stream.

As for the Uber v Taxi debate I think taxis are done and need to make some massive changes to compete. The drivers are in the worst positions because they're the ones on the front lines not the owners. Govt should have the nuts to level the playing field not Tory saying 'well we asked them to stop while we work I out' and then letting Uber continue unimpeded.

Because they aren't operating here. Both Steam and PSN have their infrastructure in the states. We're only downloading their stuff (and paying them for access). Guess who ends up paying taxes if the games had tax? Us. 13% on $80 (average full release game) isn't chump change. That's trackday fuel.

Welcome to the digital age

This sounds like the horse whip manufacturer whining about cars taking over their business. Uber or not the Taxi is going to go extinct sooner than later.

Uber is fighting back hard, I love how they are email spamming all of their existing riders trying to get them to recruit drivers... I received this email a few days back:

REFER A DRIVER, EARN $100
For a limited time, tell your friends and family about driving for Uber and earn $100 in rider credit once they've completed their 10th trip.
This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to earn a flexible income. Top Uber driver-partners in Toronto earned over $1000 last weekend.
As Uber becomes more popular in Toronto, we need more drivers in order to remain as reliable as possible. So invite your neighbours, friends and colleagues today!
