How to deal with crooked people

How do you deal with crooked people? I just sold my rental house and paid the lawyer upfront. We agreed that the price was all inclusive. Now I see a charge (less than $100) in the breakdown which he says is extra fees. I'm out of town so my wife was dealing with it. She said they wont refund it and the guy was starting to get rude on the phone. I'll probably go down there when I get back but if they refuse to pay up, what should I do?

You don't take the law into your own hands..you take'em to court...

Less than a hundred bucks... let it go. Trust me, you'll save yourself massive headaches in the end. You can let him know that you won't ever use or recommend his services to anyone but beyond that it's a waste of your time and cognitive resources.

Avoid taking a lawyer to court if at all possible. My mother's initial divorce lawyer was one crazy F'ing b!+ch! I won't bore you with the details but, suffice it to say, she was LITERALLY a crazy bi-polar woman who completely took advantage of my mother. This ultimately ended up in court, my mother lost and had to fork over $10K. The lawyer didn't let any opportunity slip where she could gloat or look smug. You're supposed to complain to the Upper Canada Law Society when there's a misconduct issue regarding a lawyer but that's a waste of time too. It's a society of lawyers created to protect lawyers (as if they need it). I recall reading somewhere that not a single lawyer has ever been dis-barred from Upper Canada due to complaints.

Sounds like reporting a cop to another cop

You never sue a lawyer unless you're a lawyer - otherwise that's just crazy. You'll run out of money long before you get old. And you never sue anybody (even if you are a lawyer) for something like $100.

But complaining to the LSUC is just filling out an online form, so why not? Costs you nothing and if you're the 50th person who has complained about the same thing something might happen. At the very least he has to answer questions.

Your story is better if you have some evidence of what you say e.g. someone else heard him/her say it.

If nothing happens you're out the time it took you to fill out the form.

I definitely don't intend to take them to court. But I will at a minimum follow up with upper Canada. Besides the money, they were late with paperwork, called my wife to follow up with utilities (which is a part of their job), hung up the phone on my wife and accused her of harassment when she called back. Customer service is just not what it used to be.
