How often to change tires?

I got my 2008 ninja 250 last summer. When I bought it, it had about 9000 km on it, and the original owner told me he had never changed the tires on it. I've put on about another 3k on it so its close to around 12000km now. The tread still looks ok, but I'm not sure if I should still get new tires or not. Not sure if it is advisably to change tires since all the kms are on those tires.

Only change due to age (5+ years old), weather cracks, loss of tread, or a blow-out.

Usually...

Fronts are worn out when the sides start cupping. Rears are worn out when you run out of tread down the center of the tire.

front tires about 2 per season, rear tires normaly 3 or so
I ride an average of just under 16k a year including track days and I don't use that many sets on a 750, not sure how people go through that many tires

If they look good still keep going, the rock hard tires those things come with from factory will probably last until 20000k or more.

I use perrelli supercorsa race compound.
lots of hard riding, I,m 10 min from river road and do a lot of wheelies and stoppys.
plus I get about 20k a season

last season I did manage 2 rears (started on one and changed on im still on) 1 front changed only because of a crack

If we ever happen to hook up for an Orangeville area ride I will remember to let you lead. When you get stopped, I will keep going as if I never knew you.

In reply to the OP, I average about 20k a year and go through a set of tires every year. I am currently using Avon Storm II Ultras and have been able to get 22k out of a set. As others have noted watch for wear bars on the tread, cracks in the sidewalls and cupping on the front tire. If any of these occur, start shopping for tires.

Generally most people that bring their tires to me have about 12 to 14k on them. Since your tires are the only thing keeping you on the road, its not worth risking the extra couple of thousand k.

I would agree with that average

You can just take a close-up picture of your tires, and someone here can tell you if it's time for a change or not.

For comparison I just changed the stock tires the 250R came with at 12,000 km. I think the rear had approx. 2,000 kms left on it. The front looked like it it was barely worn in. I thought I'd try something different than the stock IRC tires that came with our 250r. I only have approx 200 km's on the Dunlop GT501's , so it's tough to compare the longevity and performance of the tire compared to the IRC.

I'm at 23,000 on the RoadRunners (stock only for 09 Ninja 250, I think). Soon to be changed tho.

09 and up have the IRC Road Winners. 08 had some Dunlops, iirc (might have been bridgestone BT-45, but I think it depended on the market). I got about 12,000km out of mine and went to Bridgestone BT-106s (110/70-17F and 150/60-17R) and get around the same out of a set of those. Last season I did 20,000km, mostly commuting so they tend to get worn out in the center before anything. I LOVE the BT-016s on this bike, and I don't think I'd put anything else on it.

I will keep that feedback in mind when I'm purchasing something, altho all the negative I've read about upsizing to 150s.

What's your opinion on that ? Is it really handling--; ? lol

I change mine when I see the cords!

it's hard to say, I've head of guys dragging hard parts on the stockers, but I never felt comfortable enough to push them that hard. I really like how the 150 rear handles

This could partially explain the encounter I had with a resident on River Road last season.
