How much would you pay for an engine

I found a really good engine with around 3k on it. Mine has top end problems.. possible piston damage as well. Dont want to risk simply replacing the top end.

How did you come to the conclusion that you have "top end problems.. possible piston damage as well"? What are the symptoms? Did you diagnose or brought it to a shop?
Did you end up completing the valve adjustment?

This is for your 07 Suzuki GS500F? What's wrong with your engine?
Will you be doing the swap? Or paying someone to do it?

Edit: Did you encounter issues with the valve adjustment?

When do u think he finds out its not a v-twin?

The bike is a vtwin 2 cylinder (gs500). problem is low compression in one of the cylinders. diagnosis so far are that both exhaust valves have little to no clearance(I don't have a feeler gauge small enough..0.02). Valve shim buckets on the exhaust valves are tight and stuck. I plan on removing the camshafts to do a valve adjustment since I cannot get the shim out due to the tight bucket.

sincerely,

a rider who is missing out in this great weather.

buckets were stuck and I couldnt get the valve adjustment without taking off the cams. the opinions I was given were wither replace the top end or swap in a new engine.the top end woulda cost me nearly 600 inc labour. Even then im stuck with a bike that has 42k on it and could have more problems down the road. instead of the 600 im going to bite the bullet and get a new(used) engine. swapping in an engine is much faster than having to install the top end..(new valves, possible machining).

Who is going to swap the engine? I hope it's not you.

Reading some of your previous threads, I would suggest the following...

Find a trustworthy mechanic
and/or
Take a course on basic engine maintenance (Offered at Centennial) or read up BEFORE tackling engine work.

Yes I have someone whos going to swap it. I am going to use the old engine as a training tool for myself. Going back to my inital post. What is too much to pay for a used engine. even if it only has 3k on it. And this is canada, not the states where everything seems to be 50% cheaper.

Not the route I would take, but if I did I would not pay more than $1000 for the engine and labour total. And I would want that engine to be warrantied. How do you know it has 3k on it and not 70k?

Why not try to finish what you started? Where are you with the valve adjustment?

Another option would be to part it out (or keep for parts) and buy a low km gs500 for $2000-$2500

Yeah I wont be paying much more than that. And yes I am going to get documentation on the engine.

Since the buckets were tight i would need to take off the camshaft. I dont have the space nor the time to do this. reassembly is more of a worry.

I dont think id get anything for parting it out at all. Ive been selling extra gs500 parts once in a while and I barely get bites. Id rather pay the 1000 and have my bike Im more familiar with. The lowest km gs on the market that is relatively newer_2000 plus and are in that range 2000-2500$ all have around 30k plus on it.

Thanks for the input.

Heat gun / paint stripper / hair dryer pointed in their general direction should loosen up the stuck buckets. If using a heat gun or paint stripper, NOT too close! ;)
Also, watch the Youtube video in my post above to show how to remove them properly, and the tools you require.

You already have it apart and are ready to give up and buy a new engine? What's going to happen when you need to do the valve adjustment on the new engine? Get it right and then you will know how to do it yourself next time!

great tip on the heat gun. I'm already set on buying the engine. (I placed a deposit). I will fix the old engine and sell it to recoup my costs. I think I should be able to fetch 500-600 for it. I don't want to waste anymore riding time this year so swapping the engine will be quicker. I understand that I sound a little hasty but I think that going from 42k to 3k for maybe a difference of 500 is not that bad (after purchasing swapping and off loading the old engine).
