i just recently picked up an import 88 fzr250. i was quoted at $300 for parts and labor at a shop. (im choosing to keep the name of the shop to myself). that sounds a little bit ridiculous to me, but i do not know too much about bikes. can someone chime in on this and justify or argue this estimate?

Welcome to grey imports, I would suggest you learn to do the work yourself.

Parts and oil will run you about $100'ish depending on what needs to be replaced and then a few hours of labour. So depending on their labour rate that is ballpark right.

And that's a fun little bike.

Sounds more than fair too many cheap bstars out there if you want something done you have to pay for it. Why does everyone expect shops to work for free.

thanks guys, i wasnt looking to get it for free, i just wanted to justify the estimate given. i do plan on learning all the ways around my bike very soon, but for now i just want my bike on the road so that i can ride to work.

Assuming that includes removal/re-installation of the forks on the bike, thats a fair price. Even if it wasnt, its certainly not a ridiculous price, especially if they are doing the job properly and cleaning out the fork internals which are probably filled with debris.

Go to a garage that stands behind their work. I had fork seals done twice on the original forks by a certain garage heavily marketed on GTAM. I ended up buying forks from a scrap yard and then paying this guy again to install fork seals on those forks before the job was done.

John is highly qualified and he lists $230 on his website for a fork overhaul..of course I'm sure it varies from bike to bike and then on any parts needed. Unfortunately he is located north of Peterborough...great roads nearby to test the bike when he's done!

Geez, this guy is right around the corner from me and I never knew it! Thanks for the info, I'm gonna have to pop in there someday!

Just did mine and it's a pain in the rear. $300 is at the high end for a fork job.

unfortunately the bike is still in the shop... its killing me waiting all this time. i can't stand public transit during rush hour, and grinding up against smelly old grannies. look forward to riding with you guys!

Shops normally charge $250+, that is why I started doing them for myself...And I do them for other people for half what the shops charge, even while they wait sometimes...It really does not take that long, however you do usually require some special tools for most bikes that most people do not have in their garage, and also an under the triple front stand is best..

Always use OEM fork seals IMO, they cost a little more but I never have problems when using them...Ive had some aftermarket seals leak very soon after install..
