How many data bases are you on?

When I mostly retired I stopped using the 407 and turned in my transponder a couple of years ago.

Then about three months ago a situation dictated I go toll road, expecting a bill via snail mail, photo charge, km charge, paper invoice charge and account fee.

I never got a bill and then realized they might have an old email address and were likely tacking on interest charges.

I phoned them and straightened things out with no interest charge but they didn't have my new addy.

Now I'm scratching my head wondering about what other places might have my info on a drive, possible in a computer bone yard or easily hacked system. Walmart refused to cancel my account.

How many forums never cull the herd so they can claim large memberships.

I know one Goldwing forum that is dying but still has tons of members, mostly inert. Most threads are started by the head honcho, hoping to fan some flames.

"Prescence" on the internet never goes away, it is typically shelved in a database, the version of which is on a server (yes, the "Cloud" is someone's server being rented out) or if you go far back, it will be on magnetic tape stored offsite (like, Iron Mountain).

Yup. i bet your email address (at least) is on 1000+ databases - you give it to one free site, who will then sell it to someone who will then resell it to someone, all (mostly) in the name of targeting you for advertising.
Funny because I have a gmail with firstname.lastname@gmail.com and I get emails that are different variations of that combination.

Frustrating as eff because I don’t even want to unsubscribe as I know all it does is show the senders that the emails are valid and someone sees their email.

I have a LOT of invoices, deliveries and credits from polish sources. And the emails I get…don’t even match ANY gmail account I have. Close…but not exact.

I have had the same email address since 1996 or 97... so I'm guessing I'm on more than three mailing lists.
I run my own mail server, and use reverse lookup, spam assassin, etc etc etc and STILL get a ton 'o crap in the catchall account. I cannot email my doctor 'cuz he has some stupid "secure" email service that the return address doesn't match the sender, so it bounces. I have to use Gmail.
Some of the attempts at ID theft are down right hilarious... like, you COULD put some effort into it.
A return email address for my bank does not look like: xxxxx@someplace_in_Russia.ru

...but reading in the news about people paying off their CRA penalties and fines in Amazon gift cards says it must be working.

Why does a flashlight app need access to my mail account and contacts list?
Exactly, but there are plenty of users oblivious to this and will just allow access.

Always like the one's where they try to mimic a delivery service, and tell you have a package waiting, one I didn't order... ya ok.

Unfortunately these scams must work at some level, I just laugh at them, but someone must get caught. Sadly it might be some older senior who can't keep on top of this stuff.

Think about all of your credit card purchases, your internet browsing, your streaming, your landline and cell phone usage and your email address being submitted or skimmed from your system + your contacts as well. All of this metadata is out there being reviewed and then sold to various organizations either trying to sell you something or track you for some purpose.

That's why there are some folks living out in the wild, off grid, no computer and paying cash for everything. They think the government is tracking their every move and if you say the wrong thing they'll come for you. Sounds paranoid to me.

I believe that we should rise up and ............. sorry there is someone at my door, I'll be back in a moment.........................................

Why does a flashlight app need access to my mail account and contacts list?
My wife figured out what I’m getting her for Christmas because the stupid phone started showing ads for the gifts I was considering.

I checked on my phone and since we’re on the same wifi it popped up on her phone instead.

She likes her new Kobo.

Worried about how many databases you are on?
Add to this, is the number of cameras that have captured your image.
The bright spot in this unacknowledged image capture is that none of the cities in Canada make the top ten list.
Indore, Hyderabad, Delhi, Chennai, Singapore, Moscow, Baghdad, London, St. Petersburg, and Los Angeles are the top 10 most surveilled cities outside of China (based on the number of cameras per 1,000 people).
China, tops the list with 372.8 cameras per 1,000 people.

Are people here aware of this surveillance?
Some are, met a guy exiting a Walmart store hooded and masked, his concern was personal privacy. He told me that he pays cash for every purchase and he just hates the cameras at store check outs. Thing is that cameras are everywhere now.

Does your neighbour's security camera infringe your privacy?

Does your neighbour's security camera infringe your privacy?

In some jurisdictions the camera can only scan your own property but then when there's a crime the police ask you to review your recordings for clues.

Does your neighbour's security camera infringe your privacy?
Somewhere buried in Ontario privacy law there is a gem that says your surveillance cam can't record scenes off your property.
There are millions of Google Ring cameras pointing out into public space, monitoring everything, constantly up-loading to Google... and there is more than a few police services that say they should have unfettered access to these streams.

A couple of weeks ago a nice lady from New Jersey got tossed from The Radio City Music Hall, that she was attending with her daughter's Girl Guide troop, because a camera picked her up, and facial recognition software identified her as lawyer employed by a firm that is suing the Radio City Music Hall.
