How long would you ride on a plugged rear tire?

Rode over a screw on the right side of my rear tire (in between the center and right side). It was plugged at rosey toes using a standard plug. (The tube plug that u trim and wear off the excess). I'm at about 400km since the plug it still holds air, no problems. I won't be getting tires for a few more days, would anyone ride on a plugged tire this long? I'm not riding hard, staying off the twisites and taking right turns gradually. I've only been riding to and from work 20km total daily and then some other light duty riding (arrands, to and from my gfs, light 2up rides) besides one trip up to wasaga last weekend.

I rode the entire length of a tire with a plugged rear. I cant remember how many km's I put on the tire, around 7k or 8k. The tire only had 1k when I found a nail in the rear. If its the front, I replace it right away.

Basically, if you keep riding your bike with a plug in the tire YOU WILL DIE!

Get your bike running proper and come for a ride on friday...

If Ted plugged it, you're probably fine. Did he take the tire off the rim to do it?

I've taken 2 rear tires to the wear bars with plugs in them, I wouldn't hesitate to do again. Both plugged when almost new.

Nope did it on the standI don't feel as worried as I was before, thx guys lol

I'm not sure that I would trust a plugged tire, further than a shop that could replace it.

Does insurance cover you if a plugged tire blows and you crash? Will work hold your job?

I swapped a plugged tire over the weekend.
It had a little over 6,500kms since being plugged with a patch plug that I did in May.
No problems at all.

There are plugs and there are patchs with the patch being broad and round and a plug just sealing the hole. A patch is more reliable than a plug, and location is important too depending on which part of the tire it is mounted to (bottom or side).

I'd use either one if driving in a cage with 4 tires (and which are square tires with most flexing on the sidewall), but with only 2 tires on a bike (which is round and flexes all over the place) there is no room for error, so why would I risk my life to save a few bucks?

I'm surprized Rosey Toes would do either for you considering the risk. But then again he does ride all year long, so maybe I'm not surprized.

Buy a brand new tire because your new tire got a nail in it, then get a nail in that 2nd new tire less than 2 weeks later, and report back on the economics/safety of plugging tires.

+1

I had a BT 015 with about 1500kms take a giant staple. I had no plugs on hand, but I had a new Power Pure on standby. I mounted it, and less than 250 kms later, it took a nail. Plugged 'em both - got another few thousand k's from the 015, and still have a near new set of Pures ready, and waiting.

Even if a plug does fail, is it any worse than having the misfortune of getting another flat?
Some riders think getting a flat on a plugged tire is fatal - I don't get it.

Ive got about 7k on a patched rear tire and I have still been relentless on the twisties...no issues...ppl are too paranoid

I got 8000k on my plug, I have no intentions of changing it, its been hot, cold, twisted, turned, gone fast and slow. I think its my bikes third eye, I like it.

First puncture I had was repaired by Rosey Toes with a mushroom plug, tire went another 7k km without issue. Second puncture was on my current back tire, plugged it myself with a rope plug, 10k km since then and just rode to and from Deals Gap without issue

OMG...you rode on a plugged tire....may the wrath of God descend upon you.

ll you people that get rid of your plugged tire as soon as you get home and its in good shape, send me a pm I will buy it! I have plugged 2 tires( the cut off plugs) and the one on my bike 2 years ago went the distance till the wear bars where non existent( about 6k) and no issues at all!
I just plugged my recent bike and have gone 4k so far with no issues! Yes the mushroom ones are apparently better but the regular ones have done me fine. I have an R1 and I push it hard even with the plug!

Last year I had a hole after 10km on my pp2ct. plugged it and used it the entire year with not a single problem.

I dont like running plugged tires on the street, but sometimes you just have too....

I just bought this brand new rear Pilot Power for $170, put it on and not even 10 min later had a puncture...So plug it is! It lasted all weekend, and when I go back I will be replacing the snake plug with a plug/patch....The plug/patches from my experience last very well and are trustworthy....The snake plugs it really depends on alot of things, but sometimes they do blow out...
