How far over the 1000 km first service can I go?

Blasted my new toy this week and hit 1K. Scheduled first service now for next week. Wednesday.
I'm surely going to go over - question is, how far over is reasonable?

On my 2012 Ninja 250 I had first service at 1600km. On my 2012 Ninja ZX6R I did it at 1400km. I called my service department and they were not too concerned at the time.

The first oil change is pretty important, but you can do that yourself. There's tiny metal shavings floating around in your oil right now from the engine break-in. It's a good idea to get them out ;) Also, check all the bolts that are visible to make sure they're tight.

This doesn't mean you can skip the first service though. They may need to check the valve clearances and re-torque bolts you can't see.

I definitely do not want to skip the first service. I know I can handle most of the adjustments myself, my concern was with the warranty, and if going over by a moderate amount (+ 300-500 kms) would render the warranty void, or put excessive strain on the new vehicle. Just talked to my dealership and they said going 500 over would be fine.

No long road trips for me though!

I did the first service at the dealer as well. Nothing wrong with that. I went in to see if they could squeeze me in as I was at 984km that day. They couldn't and said if I went over a bit it's ok. I was in the following week at 1490 and they said it was no problem at all.

That first 1000km on a new bike disappear so fast, I booked by first service appoint the same day I picked up my ZX6R. The next week I was back in to see if they could squeeze me in earlier than my scheduled appointment LOL.

The first service you really do want to try and get close to 1k as you can. Oil change is a must and inspection of anything that might have worked loose after assembly.

1300 kms. i had work and stuff and could not commit to the time frame. They said it was ok as long as I do not go 2000kms...

You don't have to do the "first service" at all. It doesn't void your warranty, contrary to what your dealer would like for you to believe.
You're pretty much paying for a glorified oil change. Go over the list in your manual and check things yourself if you're worried.

It needs to be done just not by the dealer :) Just keep the records of what was used and what was done.

It really is just an oil change and a whole lot of check/adjust. This is what is fairly standard for most 1000km services for bikes:

-oil & filter change (metal shavings are normal in the first oil change)
-exhaust pipe & muffler bolts inspect
-idle speed adjust
-throttle cable play adjust
-chain inspect
-steering inspect
-front and rear brake caliper bolts inspect
-brakes inspect
-chassis bolts inspect

Easily done in a afternoon with the tool kit that came with the bike (not that real tools don't make it easier).

Do the first service yourself. The oil change is the most important but a good visual inspection is of course valuable (which should be done periodically anyways).

I'm of the opinion that one should change the oil around 100 kms (per the mototune break in concept) and then again around 1000kms.

FYI I just did a semi-major service on my wee today. Took 5 hours 3 cups of coffee and 2 beers (I wasn't rushing on a long weekend Monday). It really is worth while getting to know how to do minor to not so minor work on the bike. I do not want to think how much this would have cost me at a shop. What I did was:

-Replaced air filter
-Replaced engine oil and filter
-Replaced coolant
-Replaced spark plugs
-Replaced front brake pads
-Adjust valves
-Adjust chain
-Adjust clutch
-Sync throttle bodies
-Adjust throttle
-Adjust idle
-Curse at skinned knuckles

I think I was at around 1200 -- crossed over the 1000 mark on a ride up north, so not much could be done about that lol.

couple hundred km is no problem. did my first oil and filter at 500 and went over everything else at around 1200 or so, then did oil and filter again at 1500
