How do I verify my 1999 R6 engine is the original?

I've taken the numbers off the engine/transmission and am curious how to verify if it is the original or if a newer model has been interchanged. Is there a database or somewhere to check?

often the engine # will match the vin #

Ive built and worked on alot of bikes, and Ive never seen that ever. VIN and engine numbers are completely different....Ontario does not record engine numbers along with VIN, unlike some countries and states in the US. So the only way would be to try and cross reference with Yamaha. I wish you luck with that!

IMO it should be like it is in Jamaica, when I ship a bike there the engine number is on file with the VIN. Even when I sent a replacement motor, I had to fill out papers stating what bike VIN the motor was going into. It would realy help in situations like this

weird, my yamaha xj was like that, didn't check any of the bikes i have since.

My Yamaha FZR's are also like that; the last few digits of the engine number are the same as the last few digits of the VIN.

You're all correct, it was more of a practice back in the day but it doesn't seem to be true anymore.
It's like they decided it wasn't worth the trouble or cost to have them match.

Japanese bikes are hit and miss when it comes to matching numbers. Old Hondas never had matching numbers. Harleys and British bikes have matching numbers.
