HOV lanes

Hi, I would like some clarity regarding HOV lanes in general. My riding instructor said that we are allowed to use the HOV lanes. Does that include the HOV Lane on the DVP?
Your riding instructor was correct!

Per the HTA (Highway Traffic Act) all motorcycles are allowed on Provincial HOV lanes, but this applies only to the highways...401/404/403, etc.

The DVP HOV lane is TTC vehicles only, as per the sign.

The HOV lanes in the city of Toronto are not part of the HTA, they are Municipal By Laws. Some are marked for motorcycle use, some appear to have previously been allowed but are now not.

Fun fact; if you get caught using an HOV lane incorrectly on the highway it's a moving violation and will go on your insurance record. If you get caught using an HOV lane incorrectly on the road (Dufferin/Don Mills, etc) it is a by-law ticket and will not affect your record.

Moving violation using the HOV as a single occupant is a money grab. Hey Ford stop the war on drivers!

I don't understand the argument. A bike takes up the same amount of space as a car. They are only more space efficient when in groups. There may be an argument to eliminate the distinction between moving and non-moving violations but politicians have more personally profitable things to focus on than HTA minutia.

I think the point is to up the utilization of HOV lanes AND reduce load on the core lanes. Selecting EVs and Motorcycles has a positive impact on regular lanes, and no impact on HOV lanes.
