Honda CBR 929 or 954, your thoughts.

Any of you owned either bike and if so what did you think of it, likes dislikes?
A co worker is selling his 02 954 with really low orig klms 12000 $3200.cert It's in great shape never tracked, stunted or dumped. He is a 48 year old very mature rider so the bikes in really great cond. The bike was parked for the last 5 years in storage hense the low klm. He said he started it now and then to keep the batt goin. Is there any concerns with a bike that has been stored for 5 years?

Thanks

I'd be wondering about the oil and battery mostly..

The suspension needs some work. I replaced my shock with a penske unit and had the forks completely revalved etc. In retrospect I should got a gsxr750, identical performance, better suspension, with cheaper insurance

if your not interested then lemme know, I will give him the $3200 and im being serious

What he said, or GSXR1000

Loved my 2k 929. Had rectifier/stator issues but it was a well balanced bike (power and ergos). Would've like the 54 better due to styling but i still dug what i had.

Check for the usual stuff. Did he balance the fuel? Could pull the injectors to inspect. may have junk in the tank. Check the chain...it's been sitting so it may not be as free as it should be.

Next in line if no one else buys it. Got the cash in pocket.

I've thought about one of these bikes at some point, down the line.

The 954 got better reviews than the 929 - in practice (street riding @ 80%), is there much difference?

I just bought a 929. I miss my 05 GSXR1000, but never really used the power up top on it anyways. I only went over 200 kmh on it one time, even though it was the fastest bike Ihave ever owned. Never once saw the shift light or redline on it.....too stupid fast for a streetbike really....but I loved the torque. When shopping and buying the 929, I was looking more for the comfort (subjective I know, but comfy for a hypersport bike), low seat, and smooth reliable power, and great brakes and suspension.

The 929 was the closest I could find to the 05 GSXR1000 ergonomically. And I got a pretty good deal on it (not as good as the one you are looking at though). I prefer the styling of the 929 over the 954, but that's splitting hairs.

Everything I read says awesome brakes, great handling, same horsepower as GSXR750, but way more torque.....and every Honda CBR I have owned int he past (all 6 of them) have been anvil-reliable), so I expectthe 929 to be the same.

Biggest problem I find with a CBR- bland as an appliance.....here is where my problem lies. The KTM I have doesn't physically fit me at all- however it has more soul and personality than anything I have ever ridden. The CBR will not.

I am trying to decide if I want to ride the CBR or the KTM next yr. Wih our insurance structure here, I cannot afford to insure both. The CBR will be a better all around bike, but when the road gets tight, the KTM excels like nothing else I have ever ridden......and it'll tolerate mild offroad or backroad excursions too.

Thanks

Given the choice between a bike that has seen regular use/care and higher mileage vs. low km and extended storage, Ill take the used and higher mileage any day of the week. Bikes are meant to be used. Seals can dry/shrink and gas can gum up on a bike that has sat around for an extended period of time. Periodic starts just add unnecessary engine wear - a charger would have been preferable.

I gotta ask, what's wrong with the ktm to make you want to switch to the cbr? wind blast?

He told me that he did the fuel stabilizer process every year since stored. Went to see it a few days ago and we boosted it from his Ford 150pickup truck (would that harm it?). It started right up with no prob's. I'll definitely have to get a brand new battery but was surprised how easy it fired up and purred afterwards once boosted. Yea, Honda's are bullet proof, it sounded great. I think I'm gunna pull the trigger on it. It was stored in his garage covered so there's some dust on it but a good wash and she'll sparkle again.

Is it safe to jump start a 954 from a pickup truck?
It fired up no prob, I'm jus curious if it's bad for the bike so I don't do it again?

Actually the F150 truck was running but it fired up no prob and just purred after that (no sparks or 2nd crank needed). It was smooth jus like jumping a civic to a civic. I won't do it again since I'm getting a brand new batt for it but no harm was done to the bike. One theory debunked
Thanks tho Grouch

when you buy a battery, it calls for a ytz10s,ive had a ytx9-bs in my 929 for the last 7 years, has more than enough power.alot cheaper as well.i always buy interstate,or yuasa.never had an issue and i get atleast 5 years out of these batteries.any more 929 questions? let me know, ive had mine for 11 years.a cbr 600 for 12 years before that. know them pretty good.lots of used parts for em as well.the #1 feature on the 929 is the under seat storage.

35.5" seat height. I am 5'4" with a 29" inseam.

I could have the shock lowered internally at a high cost, and a loss of ground clearance....which would suck. The KTM has no shock linkage to get lowered links for.....and I find that I drag the pegs on sport touring tires already, so any lowering would come at a loss of ground clearance. I could have the seat chopped an inch max, but it's already pretty uncomfortable for more than 2 hrs now.
Awesome bike in the twisties....in fact I am certain I ride it much faster than my GSXR when the roads snakes. The riding position and bars, and incredible Brembo brakes just make it so easy to get stupid with.
If I was 2" taller, it would be alot easier to live with...Here is a pic that demonstrates just how tall the bie is on me. I can tippy toe one foot. When right tippy toe is down, I can't even reach sidestand to pull it up.

Trying to decide if I love it enough to:
-add windscreed and handguards
-get Corbin lowered seat
-have shock lowered
-install steering damper
-fab up some kind of footpeg riser kit....there are no rearsets as footpegs are mounted like on a dirtbike + theres no shifter linkage

Or on the CBR I:
-chain and sprockets (-1 and +3)
-braided brake lines
-rear shock
-taller bars

......everything's a compromise.

Sorry guy's, I made a mistake. I just talked to my buddy and he told me that his truck WASN'T running when he boosted the bike. I recall at the time he was boosting it I was very focused and carefully looking over the bike for scrapes, dents etc. I wasn't fully paying attention to him boosting it and thought that the truck was running but now that I think back it wasn't. I now remember him hooking up the cables and then going to start the truck.
My bad
