Honda CB400T a decent first bike pick?

Hey there, just wondering what people's opinions are on the Honda Cb400 (twin) as a first bike? It's an older bike model but parts don't seem to be too expensive and there's a ton of documentation out there on them for fixing normal wear and tear - would it be a decent pick for a first time owner? I have some limited mechanical experience and would like to get a bike that's suitable for a beginner but also gives some experience with upkeep and maintenance.

It's probably safer to stick with the usual suggestions of cbr350s and ninjas, but I was wondering what you guys all thought.

Excellent first bike. I had a 1982 Honda Nighthawk 450 as my first bike and it was a great learner bike. It actually had 18 previous owners before me and only 32,000km on it. I put about 20,000km on it before moving on. If you do get the bike, let me know, because I'm pretty sure I still have the Clymer repair manual which you can have.

As with any machine that's 30+ years old, its all dependent on condition.
If it runs, and is certified by the present owner then its worth a look at.
Don't get sucked in by a 'project'....

x2 on the "Buy it certified". If the current owner isn't willing to certify it the risk is much greater - things can sneak up on old bikes (fork seals, old cracked brake hoses, etc) that can get expensive fast especially if you have to order parts online given it's an older bike - remember, it's unlikely you'll be able to just pop into your local Honda dealership and buy parts.

If they balk at certifying the bike because of the cost or they just aren't willing to do it, offer to pay it and cover the cost of getting it to/from the shop...at least you'll have an idea as to any potential issues.

Excellent bike *if* it's in good condition. It's pretty old and unless you know your way around bikes you could be in for a headache. The engine is very reliable but the tappets have to be adjusted around 35,000km (if you hear loud clicking when the bike is running that's what it is). Fork seals, brakes, tires, ignition wires, plugs, vac hoses - all the usual stuff will be in need of a good look over at that age. It's a Honda though, the best of the Japanese motorcycles by far. It will always sell for more than other makes.

Started on a 450 Nighthawk ages ago and got a 450 Hawk for my brother to start on decades later. Great first bike. The Hawk had a bit of leaking at the oil filter cover, but fixable.
