Honda airbags killing occupants

That's only one death ....Your title is quite misleading. I'm almost certain there are bigger airbag issues with other auto manufacturers out there, no?

Not only is his post ridiculously absurd, but if he even read the article, he would have noted that the airbag supplier, Takata, PAID THE FINE of $3 million, not Honda. So we really know who the guilty party is here, don't we?

For the uninformed, Takata is a major supplier for airbags in todays automobiles........ even for GM in which they codeveloped a new airbag

Thanks for coming out smurf.

I smell BS with the statement that it "sent metal debris flying". Perhaps it did, but if so, whatever the "metal debris" was, wasn't part of the vehicle. The airbags are always covered with easily-deformable plastic covers. ALWAYS. Including on every Honda. They are specifically designed NOT to have sharp edges.

Hang sharp-edged metal trinkets and decorations over your steering wheel or over the instrument panel ahead of the passenger (or perhaps from the rear-view mirror) and all bets are off - but those trinkets are not part of the vehicle and there is no way for the auto manufacturer to prevent you from doing something like that!

Accidental airbag deployment is a thorny issue, though. I wouldn't want to be the person responsible for setting deployment thresholds.

Ever heard the one where they guy got angry and pound his steering wheel and have the airbag went off?

I've also heard that if your arms are in the way when they deploy, they car break them. Airbags are meant for collisions at speed, when they are deployed at low speeds, they can be detrimental

I think the industry acknowledges that airbags cause some deaths overall (not just Honda), but they save 1000x more than they harm.

BTW all manufacturers have cars that experience stuck gas pedals too, not just Toyota. Always have, always will. Sorry to burst your illusion of perfect safety.

is it wrong to imagine the airbag deploying and driving the coffee cup right through the forehead of that idiot chick down the street that manages to back out, looking at the radio dial, talking to her kids, drinking a coffee and NEVER looking down the street every morning regardless of what time I leave the house.

When I was 16 I rolled my moms civic up at my cottage...It rolled three times according to police, the best part...NO AIRBAGS deployed.
