Hjc

Plenty of people have used hjc helmets. Had one some time ago, and didnt have any complaints. Its a good all around helmet for the price you get. Obviously its no arai or shoei but will do the job.

It is what it is, which is a cheap entry level helmet. You'd also do well to check out the Bell Arrow. RevZilla has a review on Youtube for both I believe

I went with (and am still wearing) the HJC IS-16, great helmet for the price, and no complaints so far.

I "retired" a HJC without injury to myself. Don't think it was a CL-16 but a older version.

Using a Scopion EXO-500 now. Fit me better and I think is a nicer helmet for the $.

My old helmet is an HJC AC-12, which is basically the 2 predecessors of the FS-15. It was their top end model, at the time I bought it, though. It is a good helmet, the shield changing design is very slick. I don't know if I would get one of the cheap ones though.

Nothing wrong with and HJC. Try as many helmets on as you can. A $100 helmet will be way better than any shoei or arai if its the right shape for your head.

I have the HJC CL-16 Hellion. Not a bad helmet. It ventilates very well when I take the windscreen off my bike, but when behind the screen I need to crack the visor open a bit or I fog it up at intersections. It's easy to take the linings out for cleaning. I had a sticky visor hinge and the folks at HJC were very helpful in advice to make it work right. (There needs to be a very small amount of lubricating gell on the slider for it to move smoothly) I also picked up a chin curtain ($4.00) and breath guard ($8.00). I ride a cruiser and the air flows up over my knees and up my chest into the helmet resulting in an unpleasant drumming, the chin curtain really reduces buffeting inside the helmet.

I'm quite happy with this helmet for the most part, though I think I'd try the IS-16 myself for the integrated sun visor.

i had a HJC before. no complains, did his job. but can't compare with Arai or Shori, they are much better.

you get what you pay for.

they seem like a decent helmet BUT, my cousin has one on which the fastener button fell apart after a month...I'm sure its unlikely to happen to them all but just saying. My Shoei is in its 4th season and still going strong other than some nicks and scratches due to me.

i wear an fs-15. one main thing i noticed with hjc helmets is that their pads are softer/plushier than other brands. this may be good/not good for others. personal preference i guess.

pin lock visor insert helps. i tried the is-15 with internal visor, for some reason i get annoyed as if the visor is going to come down to my nose and the gap (after the visor ends) bothers my line of site/vision. that's me though. maybe it takes time to get used to or something.

I have a CL-16, it was my first helmet. Ok helmet for a first lid but noisy. After a couple of months I wasn't able to crack the visor open because the mounting plate had worn down. Got it replaced at GP but a month later the same thing happened. The pin-lock insert works well for keeping fog at bay but eventually the insert becomes loose and the fogging starts. Ventilation sucks. Not very stable at speed but this might've been due to the helmet being a size too big for me. I'm not a fan of the shape either... the chin bar protrudes forward quite a bit.

Sounds like a lot of cons but I'm just comparing it to my current lid. It's still a decent helmet for the price especially if it's your first.

AF4iK I had the same problem so I switched out the mounting plate. When I got the new one I noticed a bit of silicone lube on the slider portion.
This was missing from my old plate. Now when it gets a bit tough to open I use a dab of grease on the slider and it works great.
Not a bad design but does need to be lubricated to work properly

I use one and it is alright. My first helmet so I am not sure if there is better out there. It is somewhat noisy but then I have my face in a 130 km/h wind. (Just joking honey I wasn't going that fast.) I just wore it for 8 hours, very comfortable. If I slow down I pop the visor up to get cooling but I am guessing you have to with all helmets.

Hold on...there must be better helmets because I paid $124 for my HJC and I am sure you must be getting something better at the $700 price point. It is just when I looked at my kids faces and realized they were going to be hungry tomorrow, I decided not to find out and went with the HJC. :p

I have an HJC IS-33 an it's fine but I wish that I had spent more time trying different models as everyone's head is slightly different and what fits for me may not fit for you. I say, don't worry about the brand so much as the fit.

I started riding this season. I picked up a CL-16. Paid $100.

DOT Approval is DOT approval, and the CL-16 (I believe) even meets the higher SNELL 2010 standard that some much more expensive helmets do not. Therefore, technically, my $100 helmet is safer. I fully realize that more expensive helmets may have better air-flow; or be lighter; or be more aerodynamic; or use better materials on the inside, but as first time helmet (when I just bought a bike, and the rest of my gear) I'm happy to have only spent $100. I am not planning to be riding in the rain, or cruising on the highway for long distances. I do believe I bought a helmet that suited my application quite well.

Above all, however, if a $400 helmet is the ONLY helmet that fits your noggin' properly, then you're better off biting the bullet, than spending $100 on a cheap helmet that just doesn't fit right or gives you a migraine.

Thanks cknowles, I didn't notice that. I still have the helmet and will give it a try.
What I originally meant though was that the first detent (just cracked open position) wouldn't hold open after about a month of use. The next notch up is way too high so it was a bit of a pain to defog the thing in cold weather. Overall though, I think it's a solid deal for a helmet.
