High idle

The below situation is more annoying then anything.
It just started this year. Every time I start my bike (cold) it idles at 6000 rpm. I turn in on with the choke and after a second or 2 I close the choke. In which case would lower the revs.
They start normal for about 10 seconds and then jump and stay around 6g.
Just curious as to why? What changed?
Hate starting it in the morning especially.

Bare in mind, if I ride around and say stop for a coffee, start it back up again it's completely normal.

Bike :
2000 gsxr 600 srad

Thanks guys.

A high idle could mean it's running lean. What happens when you open the choke when it's running high?

Could try running some SeaFoam through it (available at CDN Tire).

I had the exact same bike as you. After the mileage with all the moisture the choke cable would become stuck when you use it ie. high idle. You can try lubing the cable or get a new one

Thanks guys. I'll try opening choke when it's running. As it sounds like it make relate to what rocker guy is saying. Could be In open position.

Then again how does it explain when it's warm and I turn on it idles where it should be ?

Thanks

My bike was the same as yours, 2000 gsxr 600. I know that bike inside out. Had it to 60k kms. That's why I kept staring at your bike on that ride we were on together, lol. I wasn't trying to steal it, lol.

Back on topic, in my case, the choke cable will gradually go back to the original position as the spring pulls on it, so yes, as time goes by, your bike might be warm.

To eliminate any doubts, try starting your bike without the choke. I know, its a bit hard but possible. In that way, you'll know if its the choke for sure.

Off topic:
If your bike start burning fuses, its the electrical connectors in your left fairing.

Good luck

I had a hard time understanding what you typed, but since I have some time now, I re-read your original post a few times.

When your bike is not fully warmed and put it off of choke, the choke is actually still partially engaged. You just can't tell, unless you take apart your left faring. The reason it goes from low rev to high rev is, cold engine have a different air/fuel ratio to a warm engine. Cold engine requires more fuel compared to air to burn properly. As the engine slowly becomes warm, you need less fuel and more air.

What a choke button does is enrichen the mixture. Your bike is stuck on partial choke. As your bike warms up, the extra fuel in the mixture acts as if you are actually on the throttle. But as time elapses, your stuck choke gently releases itself because there is spring tension.

Let me know if you want me to clarify

Awesome my man. I'll try it out and let you know.
And no fuse issues.
Now when you say you know this bike inside and out, you mean you have done a lot of work on it yourself?
If so I'd like to pick your brain on the jets if you know much on that!

Did much the work myself, but can't remember the specifics of the jets. I remember hating carbs so much, lol. What's wrong with your jets?

Ps. Before you touch any screws in the carbs write the amout of turns out. If you don't know what I'm saying, don't touch anything yet.

Basically if I'm at a stand still and I clutch out and roll on the throttle it doesn't take off rite away. So basically for about one second it takes off slow and then takes off (doesn't bog, just won take off fast) primary jet?

Now if I'm cruising along on a city street at say 4000 rpm it's very choppy. Even though I'm maintaining throttle position. Now if I downshift and say cruise around 6000 (feel like a douche) then problem is eliminated.

So ride around at 6000 with your wonder woman backpack on and people won't even have to question if you're a douche. They'll just think you're special :D

Yep, sounds like primary.
Did you put in a new exhaust or air filter?

You can adjust the primary, but not the main jet. If my memory serves me right. Did I tell you I hate carbs? lol

LOL

Yes sorry forgot to mention the previous owner put a yosh and k and n.

Yes but until we get to the bottom of this you are going to love them! Lol.

Bad as bike!!

Such a hot bike
Thanks bud
How difficult to adjust primary ?
Not very difficult, I don't know your mechanical skills, but the first time I read the service manual, I was really confused. Do some searching online, then watch some youtube videos, it will clear things up.

Most likely its running lean. Mine was so lean it was backfiring

My only concern was not knowing which was primary and main. I believe the smaller one was primary. I am trying to look for some photos I took, but can't find it.

Ok great. I'm pretty much a genius so I'll figure it out! Lol
YouTube is my mechanical school. Very good to have a starting point. I'll get on that ASAP.

Thanks a lot.

No problem, let me know how it goes.

With the warmer weather I was able to confirm you were correct. Because it's warmer out I haven't needed to use the choke. It starts up and idles steady!
So next question ... Easiest way to loosen up a sticky cable ?

Lol
I tried everything, couldn't get it to free itself up. Didn't know if the cable was frayed after extended use. I end up ordering a new cable from bike-bandit.

Oh yeh, another thing, I recall those carb screws were a PITA. I would replace them with stainless or brass
