HID - The need of a relay?

Planning to get a kit for my bike, the only problem is I do not know if I need a relay or not.
I plan to get a 35w. If I let it warm up then start the bike, would I have any issues? My stock halogen is a 55w.

Mine have been on for 3 years with no relay and working fine.
I have H7's,

3 years without replacement of bulbs? Awww yeah, going to get one.

Lanny, I have installed proper HID Projectors on my Aero, and my Santa Fe. If you plan on getting HID's, for the love of mike DO NOT JUST GET A PLUG AND PLAY KIT unless it has a projector. Get a proper HID Projector Conversion. Mine came with a relay built into the harness. You will need it as the stock wiring for the Aero's headlight will not be able to handle the initial charge from the ballast. You will more than likely need to upgrade the headlight housing to make the projector fit as well.

I got the kit for the Aero off eBay. I would recommend www.theretrofitsource.com, that is where I got the parts for my Santa Fe, and I got the headlight housing (similar to the VTX http://www.kapscomoto.com/product_p/tl009.htm) from www.Kapscomoto.com (they are out in the East end). Had to fabricate a bracket to install the headlight, and modify the HID housing and headlight reflector to install them properly.

The guys at 'theretrofitsource' are great to work with and they sponsor a great forum at hidplanet.com.

If I do not get the projectors, would it flood that much? My headlight already aims really low.
I know on cars, without the projectors, they do flood, just not sure on the Aero headlight.
So I really need the relay even though it's a 35w?

Its not the 35W you worry about, its the (Around) 6A inrush on start-up that causes problems.
Majority of the time it can handle it but when you get intot he 55W HID's is where it will start causing problems.

I'm still scratching my head on this, I don't like lots of wiring around the bike, what if I throw on a switch to turn it on and off, then I start the bike, and then switch the lights on, would that be fine?

I tested out a plug and play set on my Aero first in the stock housing, and HELL YES, THE GLARE WAS UNBELIEVABLE. I'm very good with wiring stuff (5 years of car shows and doing all the wiring myself). You can get a plug and play kit with a projector and they work perfectly, and look great as well, and most drivers will not hate you as much without the massive oncoming flood light ;). I could always meet up with you to show you the way I did my bike to help alleviate any fears you have.

Its not the wiring most people fear about doing a projector retrofuit, It is the baking of the headlights to pry them apart that most people feel uncomfortable with.

yes yes yes yes yes yes yes hold on one more yes.

motorcycle headlight wires are way to small for the current draw it takes time over 3 years my battery lasted until sulfating, I notice a slight flicker and slower warmup times no relay was present. Now since i put the relay in wayyyyyy brighter and i notice my regulator rectifier was'nt working as hard and no dash light flicker when turn signals were flashing.

If you been running three years without a relay check your main headlight and dash cluster harness i guarentee you"ll have green corrision on the connectors where the first connections break away to the headlight harness that's where most current damage happens.

Don't trust me give dave a call at competion cycle in whitby and ask him how many cooked batteries he has from weak HID hookups for motorcycles.

yeah I got a relay too its not that much more wiring just shorten it lol

set mine so after i turn the key to "on" my HIDs wont turn on until a good 5-10 seconds after too

lanny don't do it, just leave the bike stock, it's too hard on the charging system in the long run.

Got it, low/hi kit.
Basically, I switch to high beam which is the small halogen bulb, I start the bike then switch over to low beam then it warms up. I'm fine as it is. Woohoo
