The request:
Put front brakes on my bike that'll SCARE me with initial bite with very little lever effort.
The bike:
2007 Yamaha R1, approx 15,000km's, front OEM pads wore down to nothing, stock lines, gross looking fluid, gross looking rotors (not warped or grooved).
Background:
I had some EBC HH pads on my 08 R6 with Galfer lines, was never really impressed with them. Girlfriend put EBC HH pads on her 09 R6 with Fren Tubo (type 2 iirc) lines, was quite a bit better. Because I like to brake with only my index finger I like a pad that bites hard with little lever effort, and works well when cold (i.e. NOT a track only pad).
The solution:
Vesrah RJL pads, Fren Tubo Type 4 Carbon Fiber lines, total brake fluid flush, replace with top quality synthetic.
The job:
Let me just say a few things about Daniels shop first. It's absolutely spotless, and organized. Nothing is out of place, ever. Super nice equipment (tire mounting machine is top notch, awesome bike lifts, etc.). Super super clean shop, like showroom clean. Well it kinda is a showroom, there was a super spiffy yellow Ferrari and flawless old school muscle car up on the hoists when I rolled in
Dropped my bike off, handed over the keys. Daniel did a quick check over the bike, filling out a checklist as he went, to see if there was anything visible that needed attention (I had only purchased the bike a week prior, so the check over was great piece of mind!). Everything checked out, and they got down to work!
I was able to watch them work on my bike through huge windows in the waiting room (great air conditioning, water dispenser machine, cable TV, etc.).
They took the rotors right off the front rim, to fully prep them (both sides of each rotor), so they were perfectly clean and free of pad material build up for the new pads! Super nice attention to detail! Rotors came out perfectly clean, ready for insane braking performance
While the front wheel was off they disassembled each caliper, cleaned all the slide pins with brake cleaner and applied the proper lube compound to them, and checked all of the six pistons on each caliper to ensure that they all came out at exactly the same pace when the lever is pulled and everything was working smoothly with them. Removed the stock OEM pads and dropped in the new Vesrah RJL pads, ohhhh sexy!
They then flushed all the old gross looking fluid out of the lines and calipers. Took off the old lines, installed the Carbon Fiber Fren Tubo lines taking extra care not to damage the CF (they are unprotected/unsheathed lines). Filled the system up with new synthetic brake fluid, bled the brakes with their fancy brake bleeding machine, did pressure tests make sure everything is working.
My favourite thing about this shop is their attention to detail. I'm SUPER picky when ever other people work on my bike, I want everything run neat and tidy, nothing rubbing the fender where it'll mark the paint, nothing rubbing the lines where it'll damage the CF, etc. Once Josh had all the lines installed he called me back to the work area to confirm everything was exactly how I wanted it, etc. NICE! He ran a line up beside each fork, not touching the fender, not touching the fork, not touching NOTHING! Super flawless job.
He offered to take my bike for a ride and get the brakes pre-bedded in so when I rode home from the shop they'd be working perfect right away, so I accepted. After initially having glazed over the set of EBC HH pads on my 08 R6 I thought it would be good for someone who knows what they are doing to get them bedded in properly!
When he came back from the ride he said exactly what I wanted to hear, the brakes were SCARY touchy!! WOOT!
And they did not disappoint. Flawless install job, not even one fingerprint left on my bike when they were done, work exactly like I want it to!
You might be wondering about the title of this thread. The funny thing is, you don't see a lot of reviews on Heritage, because when you go in there, you expect top quality service, and that's what you get. If you thought his shop was crap, and you went in and got better than you expected service, you'd write a review about it for sure. But when you come to expect amazing service, and he delivers it every single time, you're less surprised and don't blab about it as much, so I figured I better let people know just how good this guy is!
If you're looking for serious internal engine work, tranny rebuild, clutch replacement, or just simple maintenance like oil change, fluid flushes, lube your cables, etc., if you want it done right, first time every time, this is the shop to go to. Doesn't matter car, truck, bike, he works on them all.
Don't hesitate to give Daniel a call, 416-249-0422. I've called him at some pretty wacky times and he always answered, set up an appointment for me, etc. He also communicates very well by text message, which is my preferred method of communication!!
Thanks again Daniel, Josh and the co-op kid for an absolutely flawless job, again.
