heres the names of councilors that voted to end our free parking

Voter turn out for municiple elections is low so if we turn out we can get rid of these people.

They passed the motion to set up pilot designated pay parking (so you can then walk to your destination) and removed the current exception:

" City Council amend Public Works and Infrastructure Committee Recommendation 1 by deleting the words "and maintain the exemption from the requirement to pay until Pay-by-Plate technology can be deployed"

Heres who voted for this:
Paul Ainslie, Maria Augimeri, Ana Bailão, Shelley Carroll, Gary Crawford, Janet Davis, Glenn De Baeremaeker, Frank Di Giorgio, Doug Ford, Norman Kelly, Mike Layton, Peter Leon, Gloria Lindsay Luby, Josh Matlow, Mary-Margaret McMahon, Joe Mihevc, Peter Milczyn, Denzil Minnan-Wong, Ron Moeser, Frances Nunziata (Chair), Gord Perks, Karen Stintz, Michael Thompson, Kristyn Wong-Tam

Please explain. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Unsurprisingly Mark Grimes didn't vote for that idiocy. One more reason why he's got my vote next time out. Also very responsive with local homeowners and took immediate action when a couple of our young athletes were facing discrimination at Ontario Games due to the sport they were involved in. Great guy all around.

When does this take effect? And what is the procedure to pay for parking? Do I pay the same as a car, even though I take up significantly less space?

Not surprised to see several names on that list that I already had prior reasons to dislike.

It almost seems as if riding a motorcycle is deliberately discouraged in Ontario and Toronto specifically.

About the only positive thing I've observed are the motorcycle awareness notices on the highways. (As in - "check your blindspots for motorcycles," etc.)

We lost. I'll be spending my money to ship my bike and leave for greener pastures elsewhere in the world next year.

Blood suckers.

You're looking at 50 cents an hour, $5/day, $25 per week, roughly $1000 / year (assuming 2 months off for winter).

Wonder how that sits with most of you....that's no small chump change...that's at least my track day budget for the year right there!

Seriously, that's more than my weekly gas budget...and it is possibly damn near most of your monthly insurance rates!

Double the price of any car owners insurance or fuel prices and watch the uproar...but in our case...we have lost.

F this place!

My suggestion...get friendly with your local / workplace building managers and finesse your way into permission to park on their private property tucked away somewhere snuggly like. I'll start *** kissing first thing today!

Well, that's disappointing. There are a few cyclists in that list who should be very ashamed. You'd think as proponents of alternative modes of transportation themselves, they would know better.

Money talks, apparently louder than common sense.

I may have jumped the gun...got emotional there ;)

Pilot scheme: 25 designated bays in Toronto (dowtown I suspect). Free until pay by plate technology is practicable and at that time fees are to be considered.

In my experience this is how it worked for years in London before only one borough (the known greediest of them all) decided to charge 1 pound / day (one time per bay), which wasn't all that bad...would be the same as $1.60/day here and limited to say the downtown core only. This was barely tolerable I found.

Why Toronto aspires to be the Fatherland of the parking Nazis, I simply can't fathom, but there is still a chance the pilot plan arrests the project at the free parking bay stage. That worked fine in London.

The funny thing is their justification for the charges are to fund the ticket payment scheme itself! So if there are no ticket machines, there is technically no ongoing costs to paint / designate the parking bays! So why again charge us any sort of fee? It generates no proffit, and it is only necessary to pay for the ticketing scheme itself!!!! Pointless in my view!

Wish I lived in Toronto so I could actually not vote for one of those idiots.

They made parking free in '05, so since then there's been an increase in motorcycle registrations... now they're using the increased registrations to justify charging people to park again... WHO ARE THESE MORONS THAT THINK THIS **** UP?!!? Don't they realize that by charging (again) for parking, that registrations will probably slow, or go back down and they WON'T make the money that they're anticipating to make?!

They're actually going to make it WORSE for motorcyclists now, because they're gonna force bikes to park in "designated areas", which means more inconvenience for us, and LESS parking spaces available for cars (especially in the off-seasons, when there will be less bikes... cars will not be able to use those spaces).

It's not ****ing rocket science.

Write this councelor and bombard him with your complaints!

Just got this reply from City Hall:

Councillor Matlow has asked me to reply to your message.

The motorcycle parking pilot project is a separate initiative from Councillor Matlow's request for increased scooter and moped parking spaces. City staff were developing this plan in advance of the crack-down on boulevard parking but I don't think they were coordinated with one another.

It is important to note that motorcycles are treated as a class of vehicle distinct from scooters and mopeds under Ontario law, so the solutions for parking each were never expected to be identical. Many scooter and moped riders have told Councillor Matlow that on-street parking is not secure for their smaller vehicles which can be damaged or stolen more easily.

Councillor Matlow had advocated for this motorcycle parking pilot project to return to the drawing board since it was conceived and recommended by City staff without input from the riding community. However, there was not sufficient support for his position on City Council. In the end, he and his colleagues were able to agree to modify the pilot so that the parking spaces will remain permanently free.

A number of recommendations stemming from Councillor Matlow's request for increased moped and scooter parking are still forthcoming. We don't have a timeline for completion from City staff yet but based on past experience it will probably be at least late winter or spring.
Please let me know if you have any additional questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Brent

Estimated $250,000 revenue a year is not enough to pay for the pay by license plate machines + readers for parking enforcement officers. Also limiting Motorcycles to specific areas will not be able to stand up to a legal challenge. Motorcycles are registered motor vehicles, we pay the same sticker fees as cars. I don't see how they can limit our ability to park where cars park.

No one is saying you wouldn't be able to park anywhere a car does. You would still have the option of paying full price for a regular street parking spot.

David, can you please post the link to the Council Minutes where you found this? I'm still out of the country & can't seem to access them on my phone.

This amendment may not be a bad thing. Its not as good as we wanted because there is no reference to public consultation. The way I read recommendation 1, as amended, is that it implements the 300 new spaces on a pilot basis, but removes the reference to charging in the future, and is silent on what happens now. They can't just start charging us now without passing a by-law, which doesn't appear to have happened, so the status quo remains for now. This doesn't mean that they won't pass something later, but at least they appear to have decided to not come to that conclusion now.

I will be back in Toronto this weekend, so I'll follow up with Councillor Matlow's office on Monday.

Moderators, should this be merged with the sticky thread?

Personally, I think we need to advocate that things remain as they are.

Look at that guy's reply - How would motorcycles, scooters or e-bikes be protected from theft with a designated lot? I can understand damage, because you'll no longer have cars sharing the area, but that alone shouldn't justify having the city spend money on designating these 25 new lots.

hink of the costs, people: you have to pay an urban planner to design the lots, then construction crews to (at minimum) paint the lines, and remove obstructions, etc. to create the lots. THEN we'll be limited to these lots, so rather than just parking in front of the store we wish to access, we might have park a few blocks away - what if the moto lot is full?

Increased inconvenience for us, and increased cost to the city, for what?!

Retro - how would motorcyclists have to pay for parking in non-designated spots? as they were pre-2005, where paid papers would get stolen or blow away?

Fight to keep our system AS IT IS!
