Helping out at my buddy's shop....

Having spent part of yesterday dealing with people complaining about how long it is taking to get their motorcycles repaired, here's three things to consider:
1) If your machine is older than you are, expect it to be difficult sometimes to find the necessary replacement parts.
2) If it hasn't been road licenced for over a decade, your sense of urgency does not demand superhuman effort on my part. We'll try to get it done as quickly as possible, but you've waited this long so you can wait a little longer.
3) Covid-19 has messed supply chain up considerably. I can't rush suppliers or shippers, please be patient.
Any further comments ?

Good comments. A friend got a call from his mechanic on the one year anniversary of his car being in the shop. It was a mutually beneficial arrangement. It gave the mechanic something to work on in the slow times, time to source the parts (a lot of the parts used were lightly used parts removed from other customers cars when they upgraded) and gave my friend good work done at a great price. Apparently the engine has been apart, new clutch/brakes/suspension and who knows what else.

also keep in mind guys working in a bike shop/dealership (a niche industry in canada at best) arent making a whole lot of money

my favorite was, its been making this wierd noise for a few months now. And today when it quits is find out why day??

"I can buy it cheaper on Amazon."

Then buy it, why are you even talking to me ?
Factor in the dollar exchange, shipping, maybe brokerage fees and the time you have to wait for it makes it all worthwhile, doesn't it ?
And when its defective, poor quality or flat out doesn't fit, then what ?

My wife freaked me out when I got a call the first time she drove her car after I replaced the brakes. Complaining about a strange ticking. I had buttoned it back up properly and taken it for a test drive with no issues but it still plants a seed of doubt when you get the call. Sound went away before she got home, probably just picked something up in her tire.

Well sometimes the noise went away because there was no pad, metal backer, and the pot pistons were too short to grind.
Or the hanger bearing, remember two piece drive shafts because the car was 26ft long? and once the shaft fell out on the pavement everything got quieter
And my special treat , it squeeks once started and gets louder as you push the gas?? Sir, there is NO oil in the engine, the squeek I think is the pistons going up and down. Did the light come on?? We just bought this car for my daughter two weeks ago and the guy we bought it from said when the light was on , it meant lots of oil. AMC cars (a hornet) are different from cars made in Canada.
This was pre needing a saftey check for a car, UVIPs , emmissions or anything. $35 plates and away we go. No one should miss those days

Ah, good ol' AMC. There was a spring under the hood, that allowed the gas pedal to come back up from the floor.
Once it rusted out and snapped, you went into immediate and semi-permanent acceleration mode.

I used to live next to a mechanic who had what looked to be a part of a busted torque converter on the wall. It turns out it was a vented disc brake where the owner had worn through an entire side of the disc and a portion of the cooling fins. The car came in for something else, not brake issues. The owner was ****** and was convinced the mechanics were trying to upsell him when they wouldn't let him leave without a brake job.

I am guilty of that. In my defense, it was in butt **** nowhere and I panicked. As soon as I did it, i thought to myself, this was stupid.
Not entirely stupid. For some issues, that may work. For most, it is obviously a lost cause.

when you are out in butt*** nowhere and your buddy is complaining about cell signal, if your golfing or fishing, tell him to hold the club or rod beside his head because the carbon/graphite will double his antennea signal. Take his picture doing it.
