Typically most big "computer" stores such as Future Shop, Best Buy or Staples have arrangements with the manufacturers. So simply bring it back they will test and if deemed warranty it will be sent for repairs. you wait and after a few weeks get a fixed (hopefully) computer. I just had this issue late last year with my laptop. it was painless other than the wait.

Thanks for the info but my issue is a bit of a grey area so I would like to get some assistance first.

if it's in warranty call the manufacturer, they will have you run a diagnostic over the phone. when it fails likely they will send out a replacement drive and you send the old dead one back. it's fairly painless

Thanks but Toshiba will not send just a part.
The computer has a US warranty. It is a hand me down gift. The warranty expires in Feb.
I am hoping someone can help somehow.

when i had a toshiba they sent out hard drives no problem. the us warranty may give you a hassle. the big box stores won't be able to help you either, for the most part they only deal with product they sold to you even if they carry said product that the competitor sold you. you may have to have toshiba send the part to a friend/relative in the usa and they forward it to you, though the cost of shipping may not be worth it. hard drives are usually considered a CRU. i've replaced them in hp, ibm, apple, toshiba and gateway products. usually there's an easy to access door covering the hard drive (these days it's the whole bottom) that either comes off with a switch or a few screws.

I don't know about toshiba but i know many companies have what's known as a "global" warranty and having the hdd replaced in canada for a US notebook would not be an issue.

Toshiba will not provide such warranty.
They want me to ship the entire laptop back to them at my expense just to replace a dead hard drive.
It makes no sense.

I'd take this opportunity and pickup a SSD. 128gb SSD's are around $70 now when on sale, huge improvement over a regular hard drive. Otherwise you can pickup a regular drive for ~$30 off Kijiji or Craigslist.

Sometimes it's just not worth the hassle to get something warrantied

+1 buy a new hard drive. you answered most of your questions with you not being willing to send it back. so now spend some cash and get that laptop working...

It's more about the principle.

lets keep this on topic, and the unsubstantiated accusations to ourselves, shall we?

Anyway, I work at a computer store (not FS/BB, but a small mom and pop shop). If you have a US purchased laptop then toshiba canada isn't going to do anything for you, and neither will Future Shop or Best Buy. The manufacturer of the HDD won't likely help you either, since the HDD is provided to Toshiba as an OEM unit, and carries the same warranty as the computer it was sold in. Even if it's within the warranty period, it's unlikely that the HDD manufacturer will deal with you since their warranty agreement for OEM parts is with the manufacturer they've sold the drive to, not the end user.

if you still want to run a scenario by me, send me a PM, and I'll see what I can do.

It's a Toshiba hard drive.
See what I mean by principle now...lol

Unfortunately that doesn't really matter. Toshiba's storage division isn't necessarily directly affiliated with their mobile computing division. But it's like i said, principle or not, if it's a US model, toshiba Canada isn't obligated to help you. It's sucks, but unless you have a global warranty, thems the breaks. If you're looking for a replacement drive, ssd is the way to go. Depending on your storage needs, you can find 120gb drives for less than $100.

Having worked for a Canadian distributor of consumer electronics, I can tell you that the Canadian arm of the company is very unlikely to honour an American warranty. "Grey Market" products cut significantly into a company's profitability and, as they are separate corporate entities, they have not received any remuneration for the purchase of said piece of equipment.

You'll have to contact the American arm of the company.

Besides HP who else has a global warranty? I know IBM used to but they spun their notebook division to Lenovo and I don't know if Lenovo offered the same service. I don't believe Dell has one either as when i worked for them US machine owners were directed to the US support.

Applecare is supposed to give you international coverage over the standard warranty, but I've never had a problem getting warranty support in the US. I've had an iPhone and iPad replaced in the US without issue
