HELP finding a MC for a new rider

Yo, I got 2 questions...First I just got my license and i'm itching to get my first mc. I got my M2 in Toronto and since I passed I been checking out MC's all over town. I been all over Kijjiji and craigslist but I don't trust that. Checked autotrader and a few MC dealers around the city but - I don't want to make an *** out of myself buying a MC and then find out i cant afford the insurance. All I want to know is what some experienced riders learned on. Y'know like what's an easy MC to learn on, good insurance etc. I'm 24 yrs old.

2nd question - what kind of lock would you use? Or what would you recommend? I know any bike can be stolen, but what do you recommend I get to make sure they go after someone else's mc? (serious answers please - i dont have a dog or a cop to leave donuts by to make him watch my bike...) Thanks, I appreciate all replies. later.

What would you guys recommend? I'm a dude - but I don't mind feedback from ladies and dudes. Please include brand names for locks and MC's I am a bit new to being an MC enthusiast.

You're 24...and obviously able to read right?

Start here:

Once you're done with those make a shortlist of what bikes you want to look at buying, then call around for insurance quotes. There's a whole section devoted just to insurance and a Newbie insurance thread right below this one.

Kijiji is fine, idk what sketches you out about it. Most folks buy and sell their bikes on there.

Welcome to GTAM and enjoy your stay.

I appreciate that. Yes, I can read. I was just asking for opinions from riders on the forum..that's what forums are for..I'll look through the links though. thanks.

While I do feel bad in hindsight for being snippy, much worse has been said on this forum for less. Read the stickies, look at old threads and THEN ask for opinions when you can already show that you've got the basics down. The stickies are there for a reason and they answer all of your questions.

The second and last links in particular would be most beneficial.

Took me longer than I'd like to admit to figure out he was talking about motorcycles and not motorcycle clubs. Thought we had an SOA fan here

Good luck in your search. Read through the threads Macs posted, they'll help you out a lot

From reading your post - I would think you're a GSXR kinda guy.. I'll leave it at that.

Don't worry about buying "gear". Gear is for losers. Instead spend the money on a gsxr-750 or higher so that you can smoke dem donut eatin' cops on dat bike yo..

I have a GSXR 750 and I have high end gear, not sure what you are talking about, I also have a zx600rr as a race bike

I am assuming you are a PIG and got offended by his donut eating comment perhaps?

For someone that started riding last spring you surely are not very tolerant of new riders and their questions, and you surely talk a lot of **** about riders on Gixxers that will run circles around you.

Please just shuussshhh

To be honest.. I haven't even started riding at all - I'm as fresh as they come.. nor am I a cop (nor do I have any affiliation or high regard for them)

However, I'm not new to community forums and I posted an equally ridiculous response to a horribly constructed thread. That's all. I laughed at my response as much as I laughed while reading OP.

And with regards to my GSXR comment - it was merely an expression of an already well-founded stereotype of the typical "gixxer-rider"... not saying that they are all like that of course.. as is true of any such stereotype.

I feel as if you didn't quite get the humour in my post and are taking offence which I never meant to give in the first place.

Here's a picture of a VFR400 for kisses/make-up sex: http://i.imgur.com/AyQLu.jpg

lol not really, I'm just ****ing with you... I started wearing less gear since i bought my gixxer ;)

no it's cool man. I just wanted quick responses since i'm looking at a lot of bikes. I heard ninja's were the way to go - i read that in one of the links you gave me too. Just prefer hearing it from actual riders - yknow more than one opinion...thanks for the links. gonna go through them.

i dont know what a gsxr kinda guy is. but even though i don't know - im definitely not one. I haven't decided on a bike yet. I just want to know what other riders found to be the easiest to learn on. And as far as gear goes, I'll buy what I need, I'm not interested in gear - I am more interested in security - so what LOCKS you would use or you would recommend. If you guys don't mind what was your first bike?

I'm a new rider and just bought myself a 2010 250R special edition. It's superbike heavy.. around the weight of a 600cc bike so you'll get used to pushing it around, but it's got a more comfortable riding position and a more forgiving nature.

It is the ultimate starter bike.. It's got enough power due to it's TWIN layout (CBR250's are single if I'm not mistaken).

They can be had for about 3K (I got my 2010 Special Edition for 3K with only 5000km on it).. as for locks - where the hell do you live that you're so wigged out about it? Maybe invest in an alarm as well?

He was implying you're the kind of guy that rides in t-shirts, shorts and flip flops popping wheelies down Yonge, or a "squid".

As for locks, go as big and thick as you can, Almax chains are the best out there imo. You should also use what's called a disc lock as well as the steering lock on your bike.

Gear should be your number one concern, why keep your bike safe if you're not keeping yourself safe?

I started on a 2009 Ninja 250R, moved up to a Suzuki SV650 the same season cause I got bored with the Ninja. The Ninja is a perfect starter bike imo.

Straight answer without you have to break your brain and read the stickies that were made to answer your question: cbr250 or ninja 250. Both have their advantages. I can tell you from experience that the cbr has a better ride quality but is all of about 10km/hr slower on the freeway, but can still get you into mega trouble with the popo. If you are going brand new there is now a ninja 300.

Chains? Don't know. They will take it if they want to take it. If you actually get a bike that's recommended for starting on, just park beside anything else and as long as they are only stealing one bike, it won't be yours.

Gear? You need some. Helmet is mandatory, everything else is optional. Any problems? All you will get told here is "told ya so", even if you refuse to read the stickies.

I didnt mean i wasnt gonna grab gear, just that wasnt my focus right now.. got a lot of time to get that..jeans leather or a mesh jacket etc. thanks man appreciate your opinion on this.

I go downtown a lot. I plan on riding down there for work. Parking with the other bikes near the GO station on the road. Nice ride to work, free parking - comfy ride home. Plus i hear any bike can be stolen - just want to be prepared.

oh yeah no. im no stunter. I heard of Almax - it's like a disc lock i think with a built in alarm. I heard it's much better than a kryptonite. So that's cool.
Gear I will buy - I got a helmet, just an HJC nothing flashy. jacket nothing yet, looking into a mesh one with the armour underneath.
I was really leaning toward a ninja, was looking at a 250cc then I saw a 500cc for sale. I hear good things - they look pretty good too.

thanks Macs
