Help! Coolant leak!

Hey guys, so heres my issue, i recently bought 2003 yamaha r6 with 43000 km on it. I took it for a ride a few days ago for about an hour and then right when i shut off the engine, i could here and see the coolant boiling in the reservoir tank, and then it fills it up and pours everything out through the overflow hose. This happened a couple of times already, but i noticed that it only happens when it is really hot outside. It seems to be fine when i ride at night or early morning when the temperature is a bit cooler. The fan turns on when it should and i haven't had any issues with overheating. Im not sure what to do, i wanted to get some input from you guys before i go to the mechanic. Anyone had this problem before? Any input would be great. Thanks-Rob

Are you sure it boils? After the bike cools where does coolant level return to? Could it be that you are just overfilling your expansion tank?

Im 100% positive it boils. I can see and hear it. On cooler temperature, the coolant level returns to normal, just half way the expansion tank.

What is the temperature on the gauge when the coolant is coming out of the overflow hose?

Sounds to me that there is a leak somewhere which is letting pressure escape. That coolant is supposed to be pressurized so it doesn't boil, if it's boiling then you've got to search for signs of coolant leak or a leak at the higher points of the system which is letting air escape and equalizing air/rad pressure. Or the overflow cap is faulty and the gasket is damaged.

I tried to look for leaks all around the bike but didnt see anything. And by overflow cap, do you mean the rubber cap on the overflow tank? Or do you mean the actual cap on the rad?

DO a coolant flush and try a new rad cap for starters.

The cap on the rad should have a couple valves inside to allow coolant to flow out to the reserve tank and to suck it back in. The problem probably is with the cap which might have a small leak which constantly lets air out to the reserve and thus not allowing pressure to build and on those really hot days the coolant just continously flows out to the reserve and spills out the overflow. I'd check that out first, and if the coolant level stays really high in your reserve, then the valve isn't allowing the coolant to flow back, which indicates a problem with the cap.

Thanks alot for the input guys, i will buy a new rad cap and double check for any leak. I will keep you guys posted. Thanks again.

Rad cap suspect .... it doesn't seal the system therefore the pressure is lower than it should be = not good.

Rad cap change would be a wise choice for starters, but I'm starting to have a feeling its the thermostat's about to go. But I'm only speculating

Wouldn't the thermostat giving up just let the coolant just pass through the system? It would have nothing to do with overflowing the surge tank. Change the rad cap!

What if its stuck on close?
