Help a newbie

Hey guys,

I am looking to buy my first bike before winter sets in. I have a budget of $1500 and I'm not looking for a sport bike at the moment. I'm a complete newbie so I have a hard time differentiating the ads on Craigslist and Kijiji, I'm not sure what's a deal breaker, etc. Can anybody here give me a hand?

Welcome... When did you get your licence and are you over 25?
I encourage you to read the sticky threads on what bike to get. It will depend on a bunch of different criteria. Cruiser or sport? hwy or local roads mostly? etc...

With $1500 you're looking at older bikes mostly. You might snag a CBR125R for that price.

What are you into and answer Kargo's questions.

The bike show in January at the international centre has a used bike section. However not sure what you could expect for $1500. I dunno how many bikes will be in that range.....

Honda CBR 125 will be the only bike you'll be able to purchase on that budget and insure. Great first bike. Take the fairings off and there's your standard bike.

The bike you posted is a bit much for a beginner, before you get any bike make sure you get a insurance quote! Checkout: http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforu...Which-one-(Guide-to-choosing-your-first-ride)

If you consider the cbr there's one sold by a member on this forum, its a good deal compared to everyone selling the same bike stock on kijiji for more than $1500... CHeck it out: http://www.gtamotorcycle.com/vbforum/showthread.php?164835-2007-Honda-CBR125R-1500 <- $1200 with plenty of mods

What about classic bikes? The 125 would be the only modern bike he could buy. But if you go back to the late 80s you can find a fair bit around 1500

The bike you showed, I think I may have seen that bike at Ryerson university. Ask the owner how long its been sitting, where it was stored, and if all the fluids have been changed. I have a strong feeling it is the same bike, I'll go have a look tomorrow if its still there. Offer him >$800, see if he takes it - winter, he in need of money, old bike.

I usually don't recommend old bikes to newbies. My first bike was 1989, it had couple problems left me stranded downtown once. After you fix them it ran great.
