Helmet custom airbrush or plastic wrap?

I just bought a new plain black helmet and i'm considering getting it custom airbrushed or perhaps plastic wrapped. Has anyone out there done any customizing to their helmets? Also does anyone know a talented helmet airbrush artist or a place that will plastic wrap a helmet?

Thanks everyone and ride safe!

While I've never done it I'd be a fan of vinyl wrapping it that way if in a year or two you want to change it up its pretty easy to do. :dontknow:

PlastiDip maybe?

I considered painting a helmet awhile ago because there were some deals on helmets I liked but not the colours I liked but I could never get any real answers as to whether or not the paint would somehow compromise the helmet. I can't see why it would but I never went through with it.

Thanks for the replies....i was leaning towards plastic/vinyl dip but i called a couple places and they don't do it, and they mentioned that it's tough to wrap a helmet because it's so round. In terms of airbrush artists, i'm still searching b/c the couple i called are super busy and also really really expensive. But if anyone knows a really good airbrush artist that has some time, please let me know! :)

Dip/spray and wrap are different. A wrap would be hard. PlastiDip is spray on and would be easy.

I been looking into it as well, actually wrapping a helm isn't so bad like check out how this guy does it, pretty simple. But of course you need the right equipment.

I been wanting to wrap my helm to "white" looking around to see if any one can do it, if not I guess i can try to tackle this myself.

Didn't know that! Thx....but can you do graphics with a plastic dip?

Apples to oranges.

Plasti Dip is more of a peel-off paint cover.. You will not get the finish and sheen of a full paint, unless you are deliberately going for a matte look.
Then again, it's a fraction of the cost and you can peel it off at any time.

You can get creative:

Or not:

But it's not going to come out looking like:

You can get a glossifier for PlastiDip...

i assume that third pic is a vinyl wrap? and the first two are plastic dip, which don't look so good in my opinion, unless you just want a solid colour.

that third helmet is quite nice!

3rd looks like matte white PlastiDip to me.

What is your budget? Airbrushing is not cheap. I am not a pro and just dabble on my own but can explain why it is pricey. There is a lot of prep work, basecoats then the actual art. The most expensive part is clearcoat. Are u looking for a custom paintjob or just a color change? I recently painted my own bike and paid a bodyshop to clear it. Roughly 50.00$ per coat of clear on a helmet sized piece.

No, this lid is an air brushed custom. About $900 for the paint job, in addition to the cost of the helmet itself, $775.00. This one was painted by an outfit in Quecbec. Nice work, but definitely not inexpensive.

Vinyl wrap 100%. Going to be much cheaper than good custom paint and the job is quick. Peel it off if you want a change or go back to original.

No, as someone else mentioned, it's a custom paint. It's also not a motorcycle helmet :)

I plan on Plasti-Dipping some items and using the glossifier soon. Let's see...

just something to consider, I've been told one of the reasons the motorsports guys have custom painted lids even though the cost is on the moon is vinyl wrap or a plastidip finish provides a layer of friction and heaven forbid your helmet contact pavement will stick for a second and not slide.
Remember the old bicycle helmets with foam and a mesh cover? they stuck for a fraction of a second when they hit the ground and contributed to a lot of neck and head injury, that's why smooth shells became the norm. Not fear mongering, but I wouldn't wrap a lid.

Painting or wrapping your helmet will nullify the D.O.T. certification. Making the helmet illegal.
