Helmet Colour and Temperature

I've owned both black and white helmets. I've not noticed any temperature difference between the two.

Taking the temperature while the helmets are sitting and baking in the sun is very different from when you are out riding at speed, with air constantly rushing over the helmet.

Do the test again while riding.

Or take your helmet off when you're sitting in the sun.

It would be interesting to put a temp probe in beside your head. Your head will change what happens and moving air may cancel out difference. Good first step in the video though.

I'm with LC. I've had black helmets and white helmets. They were not the same make/model. I didn't notice much difference in temp while riding.

I wish I lived in mountains like someone ;) I remember I stack in traffic in DT Toronto in my original solid black HJC while it was +35C no clouds... Never owned solid black helmets ever since - silver and grey are my choice now, as I am not a fan of white color....

All my street lids have been plain white (now usually a special order).
I believe:
A they're cooler (temp)
B they're more visible (safer)
C they're less of a cliche (cooler)

There's a good reason why white cars were prevalent in Australia before everything had AC.

Only light colour helmets for me as well. I ride too much in stop N go to wear dark gear.

they need to sell more lighter coloured jackets as well. I want to go lighter for all gear but almost all jackets are black or some other dark colours.

For a group of people always complaining that people don't see them why is black so popular?

cause black is cool. (not literally)

I find either the lighter coloured options sell out fast, or the retailer doesn't stock them for some reason. I remember trying find a certain Alpinestar jacket in silver a couple of years ago, and it only existed in picture form on the internet, as I couldn't find a retailer that had it in stock.

On a hot sunny day I measured the temperature of a parked car (weathered black paint) and it was 175° F. Scald starts at 120°F. Don't lick black helmets.

A thermocouple tucked into a black helmet would be interesting from a heat stroke perspective. A distant relative got heat stroke and now has vascular dementia. I don't know how much the two are related.

I imagine the Styrofoam insulation would help prevent heat transfer from the shell of the helmet to the riders head. I'd like to see results of temperatures inside the helmet as well as different coloured gear.

The original video gave internal temperatures (black was noticeably hotter). Sitting on a table though, things will be different with air flow and they will be different with a head inside.

The simple conducted heat transfer is linear with temperature difference. Black outer will have more heat conducted to the inside liner as the delta T is higher. Whether that is measurable when airflow is stripping heat from the inside liner is a real question.
