Helmet acceptable for training course?

I have 2 old full-face helmets without visors my GF and I are hoping to use for the course before getting new helmets with our bikes. Again, we only intend to use them for the course.

They still have chin straps, so I would assume it would be no different than a 1/2-helmet.

This is mainly for $ reasons, as we can't afford booking 2 spots for the course and get brand new helmets at the same time. So would they be ok to use?

Thanks in advance,
N

I don't think they will let you use helmets without visors. That was for my course of course, I did mine at RTI.

Standard dot helmet, but seriously don't cheap out on head gear.

Whoever is your course provider will have a gear requirement list.

Ye Jayv is right, I was in your situation too buddy. I was planning on buying a 50 dollar helmet. But luckily these forum members showed me that it is not worth it. Get good gear, your life is worth more than 300 bucks.

Well aware of how much my life is worth and you should not chimp on gear, but as I said, these are only for the 2 day course and I have a brand new helmet of great quality waiting for when I am actually ready to ride.

Im still a little confused as to why they won't accept because there is no visor, yet most cruiser/motorcross helmets have none.

Edit: the helmets I currently have are DOT approved.

On the course websites it usually states Standard DOT approved helmets. But always double check with your instructor. Is there a phone number you can call or something?

I've sent emails, but being the long weekend, I haven't gotten a reply yet. Thought it wouldn't hurt to ask here as well.

how come ur full-face helmets don't have visors !? you took it out or was it damage/broken ? if it was due to damage/broken, i don't think they will let you use it for the course since the helmet shell itself might suffer unseen damages as well

If you go with Learning Curves, bring the helmets to your classroom session and let the Senior Instructor have a look, it will be up to them. The lack of a visor should not be an issue as long as you have some glasses or goggles instead. Eye protection is important, in fact some states in the US will allow you to ride without a helmet but you must have eye protection!

When i did it with sheridan, they had loaners as well. So i didnt have to buy my expensive helmet but wasnt aware of it...oh well.

Hopefully you get an answer, but lunatic ^^^^ seems to have a good idea of what he/she's talking about hehe

ask yourself if you want to protect your head, or if you just want something that will let you take the course without being sent home.

head important -> buy a good helmet
just for the course -> studio cycle rents helmets.

the foam in helmets acts like crumple zones in cars. Foam degrades over time. old helmets don't protect like new ones.

Couldn't you use the helmets with sunglasses/glasses? That would already be a step up from a beanie.

Although you can rent helmets, I wouldnt trust them. I remember seeing one rider in my class who did well all weekend, but took his first fall in the middle of the test. He got up, took off his helmet and launched it across the parking lot. Who knows what else they have been through. If you are going to get into motorcycles, invest in your future.

Same here.
And some people actually questioned why they gave loaner helmets to use. Of course, this was at lunch when talking to other students; no one asked the teachers lol

I think, even if the foam in a helmet is destroyed; it would still work in say... a drop at 20km/hr. It just wouldn't help very much at say... 60km/hr+

This.

And why do you think falling and hitting your head during the course will hurt less than on the road?

You can buy brand new Scorpion EXO1000 helmets for $100 online. I've seen lower models for as little as $60... pretty affordable if you ask me.
